Republican presidential candidate John McCain had sharp words for Congress, it the wake of the defeat of the financial system rescue plan.
"They wiped out $1.2 trillion today," the Arizona Senator told KARE 11, "Congress's failure to act today is not acceptable."
Despite pleas from President Bush and Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, lawmakers rejected the bailout bill by a vote of 228-205. By the time the New York Stock Exchange closed, the Dow Industrial average had plummeted 777 points.
Answering questions via satellite from Des Moines, Iowa McCain chided those from both sides of the aisle who opposed the plan.
"This is a time of severe crisis, maybe the greatest crisis of our life time," McCain told KARE, "Our failure to act is going to cause problems not only in America, but globally."
Some opposed the package because it didn't do enough to directly address the hardships faced by those stuck in with mortgage foreclosure troubles and, in some cases, predatory loan rates.
Other resistance came from those who are fundamentally opposed to such a massive influx of government aid, at a time when the United States treasury is already straddled with record debt.
Still others remain unconvinced that buying up lenders' bad debt bring trangible results to average people when it comes to easing the credit crisis.

About 3 weeks ago, my family was pumped at winning this race.
Two calls this morning and both said “we are not going to win this”
McCain has blown this campaign. Now we can only hope something happens to derail Obama. I can still wish for it, but I am doubtful. I see no punch backs at Barry at all from the McCain camp.
He has already done that. All he has left is losing. We are now going to all pay for McCain being the candidate.
...I will vote for Palin ....it's that simple.
I cannot imagine Obama....
..if McCain said this....it was very very foolish....surely, surely he understands the Base and the American people at large are against this?
If he is the maverick he's suppose to be, he will go against this bill.
I am LIVID enough having just watched Bush-(Live on FOX) and heard with my own ears his defiance of the people's will....JUST LIKE AMNESTY, 'See you at the signing'......he's going to be twisting arms today and tomorrow till the House gets back and make sure they buy into his deceitful bill.
I AM SO ANGRY!!!!!!!!!!...He is not being truthful!.........He is subverting the will of the people with his stubborn refusal to back down.
WE HAVE SPOKEN!
IF WE, THE PEOPLE ARE SUBVERTED...........THEN WE HAVE NO OTHER RECOURSE...WE WILL NEED TO DO SOMETHING TO BE HEARD...........MARCH ON WASHINGTON--millions of us!....I DON"T KNOW....SOMETHING!
THIS IS SOCIALISM AND OUR PRESIDENT WANTS IT BIGTIME!
mccain said “absolutly” on FNC’s FNF this am.
McCain is trying to “mediate as a moderate” it is the ratchet effect.
Obama is the ractchet and McCain the screw being turned left.
McCain needs to dry off his powder and sell his musket for a modern political weapon.
McCain is for the bill, no Maverick, he’s reverting to the McAmnesty we all know too well, too bad that Sarah attached herself to an anchor cause she’s going down with the ship ..., she should kick him off the ticket and just run herself
But he is a maverick for compromise. He believes that as long as everybody is holding hands, the result will be good.
So he keeps trying to hold hands with snakes, and he keeps getting bit.
well said.
No doubt it is a bit tiresome when handing one’s country over to socialism or giving it away to illegals!
“Abortion, Supreme Court appointees, War on Terror, tax cuts, off shore drilling. No difference, huh.”
I said no difference in domestic policy, so the War on Terror is out.
Abortion? That won’t really matter outside of Supreme Court appointments.
Speaking of SCOTUS, as I understand it, libs are expected to go first, although you never can tell. And speaking of never can tell, Reagan and Bush got burned on a few of their choices. No justice is a slam-dunk. Plus, there’s no guarantee Obama would serve two terms; there’s always the future.
Tax cuts? I just don’t feel McCain’s principled committment to them in my gut. Remind me, did he vote for the Bush tax cuts.
Then there’s off-shore drilling, which I must admit slipped my mind. How is that possible, you say, when we are in the midst of an energy crisis? Well, I honestly think drilling is now in the hands of Congress. McCain would have the bully pulpit, of course. There’s always that.
“it” is the bailout. McCain urged republicans to vote for it before hand and blamed congress for failing to pass it. No parsing, no ambiguity.
This isn’t about parsing. This is about quoting McCain’s exact words rather than restating what he said in your words for whatever purpose you are trying to achieve.
“let them (fail).”
I am retired and rely on my 401(k) and a financial meltdown will certainly hurt. But I also believe that principles matter. We are only kidding ourselves if our alleged prosperity depends on poor economic factors that require support from poorly-considered government regulation and more redistribution.
We don’t have 4 years if Obama gets it. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind, if Obama wins, there will never be another election. We will go the way of Venezuela.
You're kidding! After all the grandstanding and phone calls and forcing the GOP to vote our way, we are now saying never mind! No wonder the GOP doesn't listen to us. Half the people here who were against this had no idea what was or wasn't in the bill.
Post of the day! The Congress and Senate is where the power lays.
Thats what I said may be the result of this thing failing.
There are some exceptions but notice there are a lot of people who have signed up in the past year and several in the past month or so who come in all the threads and trash McCain. Most of them don’t have a reasonal arguement. Some of them are here just to depress us. Also notice the language has deteriorated considerably. I have never saw so much cursing in FR in my life. I swear its starting to look like DU. Its probably about time for Jim Rob to make another sweep.
McCain said basically the same thing on Fox this morning and my post here was deleted.
This morning he said congress needs to act to pass this bill despite what the voters are saying because the voters don’t understand the issues involved.
Today will be the day I will always remember as the day we lost America and John McStupid lost my vote.
Well, my first clue was when he tried to slash the defense budget 15 years ago for a supposed peace dividend. It’s been downhill since.
None of those people you named, NOT ONE, could ever do the damage to this country that Obama would do! In spite of their flaws, those guys loved this country and wanted what was best for it. We just disagreed on how to do it. Obama truly hates this country and wants to see it destroyed. He wants to be leader of the world. Can’t you see that?
