House to Reconvene Thursday After Bailout Bill Fails
Stock Market Drops Nearly 800 Points
Last Edited: Monday, 29 Sep 2008, 3:49 PM MDT
By The Associated Press

WASHINGTON -- In a stunning vote that shocked the capital and worldwide markets, the House on Monday defeated a $700 billion emergency rescue for the nation's financial system, ignoring urgent warnings from President Bush and congressional leaders of both parties that the economy could nosedive without it. The Dow Jones industrials plunged nearly 800 points, the most ever for a single day.

Democratic and Republican leaders alike pledged to try again, though the Democrats said GOP lawmakers needed to provide more votes. Bush huddled with his economic advisers about a next step. The House was to reconvene on Thursday instead of adjourning for the year as planned.

Stocks began falling even before the 228-205 vote to reject the bill was officially announced on the House floor. The 777-point decline for the day surpassed the 721-point previous record, on the day after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, though in percentage terms it was well short of the drops on Black Monday of October 1987 and at the start of the Depression.

**SNIP**

Said Boehner, after the vote: "Americans are angry, and so are my colleagues."

He blamed Obama for it not passing. McCain is an idiot.

Never mind about the link. We just heard audio of McCain on the radio confirming that.

It took guts to do what they did. I’m proud of them for the stand and their constituents likely are as well. I wouldn’t count them out.

It's like the Terminator
Listen and understand. That terminator is out there. It can't be bargained with, it can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear, and it absolutely will not stop. Ever. Until you are dead.
It's like the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban. At one point we thought we killed it, but the Clintons brought it back until it passed. The only thing we can do it keep the pressure on and try to run out the clock on when they have to adjourn for elections.

Boehner pulled a Bill Clinton - he voted for it because he had to, but did not endorse it and told the Republicans to vote for it if their consciences would let them.

It's such an emergency they took 2 days off?!?

Two days to blackmail, arm-twist, and bribe enough people to get it passed when it comes up for another vote.

Check my list in post # 47 vs. your list in post # 8. Quite a coincidence, no?

These critters who are retiring are either covering for Bush, McCain or Wall St. They had nothing to lose and possibly are paying back some campaign contribution favors.

Crank it up on Thursday. The bailout should be buried in emails and phone calls by irate citizens who are again being forced to pay for the sins of Wall St. and Congress. We have had more than enough.

Those who rule should read Dr. Seuss’s book, “Yertle, the Turtle.” We are tired of being on the bottom of the stack.

20 of 26 retiring Republican members voted "aye."

Speaks volumes.

If Pelosi tried to cram the ACORN stuff back in the bill to win more Democrats, she will say goodbye to all those GOP votes, I’ll bet. Also, she will face a Bush veto and all the ACORN stuff will explode into public view.

It's such an emergency they took 2 days off?!?

I am curious as to why the entire Congress is shutting down for a Jewish Holiday??

So they all can get on the phone with their stock brokers. Even the ones who "don't conduct business" on religious holidays.

I shall call my congressman tomorrow, thank him for voting yes today and encourage him to vote yes on a similar bill.

You, my friend, seem to be the one in 200 who actually look forward to eating the crap sandwich. I would offer a napkin for what might be left on the corner of your mouth, but I'm kinda tapped out right now. (As are most American taxpayers...)

Jews = Neocons = Republicans. That's it, the Republicans are responsible for shutting down Congress for two days.

You'll hear all about those darn Republicans when Pelosi makes her nonpartisan speech before the next vote.

How long do you want to suffer, and how much?

That’s what it’s all about.

Once an American files for bankruptcy, just how long does it take to dig out of that hole? At least seven years? (And PLEASE name me the taxpayer funded account that is MORE THAN WILLING to bailout bankrupt American individuals.)
