-snip-
With respect to his campaign, McCain needs to liberate his running mate from the former Bush aides brought in to handle her aides who seem to have succeeded in importing to the Palin campaign the trademark defensive crouch of the Bush White House. McCain picked Sarah Palin in part because shes a talented politician and communicator. He needs to free her to use her political talents and to communicate in her own voice.
Im told McCain recently expressed unhappiness with his staffs handling of Palin. On Sunday he dispatched his top aides Steve Schmidt and Rick Davis to join Palin in Philadelphia. Theyre supposed to liberate Palin to go on the offensive as a combative conservative in the vice-presidential debate on Thursday.
That debate is important. McCain took a risk in choosing Palin. If she does poorly, it will reflect badly on his judgment. If she does well, it will be a shot in the arm for his campaign.
In the debate, Palin has to dispatch quickly any queries about herself, and confidently assert that of course shes qualified to be vice president. She should spend her time making the case for McCain and, more important, the case against Obama. As one shrewd McCain supporter told me, Every minute she spends not telling the American people something that makes them less well disposed to Obama is a minute wasted.

Yes, I’m beginning to panic...
Somebody is hamstringing McCain as well , for fear he might “ lose his temper “ . This was quite obvious in the debate . Whomever is doing this needs to be pushed out of the campaign rather quickly , because we will not win this way .
Unleash both of them !
Come out and call 0bama a Marxist. Set the media off! Cite his damn book and his up bringing.
right on.
Right on. Let McCain get unhinged. Look what he did to Romney, he absolutely sunk him.
Exactly how did Huck trash McCain ?

I don’t know what I was expecting when McCain first came out on the stage - but my first impression frightened me!
I almost thought he looked ill and going to ralph.
I had the same feeling I get when I try to listen to Bush speak to reporters. Painful.
Thank God McCain warmed up after awhile - that was awful.
That is true Owen, and quite correct, moderate women, the suburbia vote, is the key demo this year.
However, there is some field to till in the core Republican Base, at the very least the McCain camp should give “us” some more of Governor Palin to fire up the base of the GOP.
For me it seems a bit odd that somehow a Palin cannot approach the GOP Base seems absurd, and counterproductive to winning.
Better to speak in terms of what is relevant to the "Joe Sixpack" voter.
But his explication sounds like him cutting wind to feel important- as usual.
I agree. Bush has put conservatism and capitalism on the defensive, but Obama is clearly a Marxist. We have got to make an argument to keep him out of the WH.
I think McCain is taking more charge as he is having Sarah at his home for two days in AZ to prep for the debate.
A good way to keep away the short leash folks
Yes, but they need to tell The True Story of Barack Obama.
At the end of the fable, "The Boy Who Cried Wolf," it was not the boy who failed. He did his job. Joe McCarthy was half a decade ago. The papers John McCain can hold up in his hand now have the actual names and facts. (If those papers get to him.)
Barack Obama and the Strategy of Manufactured Crisis
"Conspicuous in their absence are any connections at all with any other group, moderate, or even mildly leftist. They are all radicals, firmly bedded in the anti-American, communist, socialist, radical leftist mesh."
Yes...this week. Part of that was McCain suspending his campaign (Palin is part of the McCain campaign too, remember?) and part of it is debate preparation in Philadelphia. I just hope that she is not being overprepared. And Kristol is actually right for once: a minute spent not going after Obama is a minute wasted. But she needs to do it in the calm, relaxed, even charming style of her convention speech as well as her Alaska debates in 2006. I know she can do it because the evidence on YouTube is overwhelming.
lol. Ya he has noobs for advisors.
Huckleberry is about as interested in seeing McCain win as Hillary is in seeing Obama win.
“We don’t need no stinkin’ CHANGE!”
No doubt , i’ve never been McCain’s biggest fan , but I must say McCain can shred in a debate when he is himself . If there ever was a time for McCain and his take no prisoners anti-pork reform message , it is now .
