With respect to his campaign, McCain needs to liberate his running mate from the former Bush aides brought in to handle her aides who seem to have succeeded in importing to the Palin campaign the trademark defensive crouch of the Bush White House. McCain picked Sarah Palin in part because shes a talented politician and communicator. He needs to free her to use her political talents and to communicate in her own voice.
Im told McCain recently expressed unhappiness with his staffs handling of Palin. On Sunday he dispatched his top aides Steve Schmidt and Rick Davis to join Palin in Philadelphia. Theyre supposed to liberate Palin to go on the offensive as a combative conservative in the vice-presidential debate on Thursday.
That debate is important. McCain took a risk in choosing Palin. If she does poorly, it will reflect badly on his judgment. If she does well, it will be a shot in the arm for his campaign.
In the debate, Palin has to dispatch quickly any queries about herself, and confidently assert that of course shes qualified to be vice president. She should spend her time making the case for McCain and, more important, the case against Obama. As one shrewd McCain supporter told me, Every minute she spends not telling the American people something that makes them less well disposed to Obama is a minute wasted.

This is a wonderful delineation of what is meant by “free the pit bull.”
I would love her even more if she pointed out that Obama stated that McCain had no judgement because he voted for the war...yet Biden did also.
I am expressing myself in figurative terms, of course, but I am mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore.
Will “FreeRepublic” allow me to express myself?
Let Sarah be Sarah! She’s a kick butt conservative. Don’t try to rein her in.
Just to head you off at the pass, John, it is too late for a campaign staff shakeup.
I’m glad that at least McCain is aware that the way his campaign handles Palin has been the weakest link. Letting Palin to talk to Couric again in a loose interview which they can edit whatever way they want is a stupid move. Unlike some other freepers, I am actually for Palin talking with the MSM, the nasty ones, not Hannity & Co. However, they have to choose the live one so they cannot distort anything. If Palin actually cannot handle them, she perhaps is not ready. (Although I’m 100% sure she can handle them).
I agree, they are totally mishandling Sarah.
“The most famous of these is the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, and I wonder if Obama may have inadvertently set the stage for the McCain team to reintroduce him to the American public. On Saturday, Obama criticized McCain for never using in the debate Friday night the words middle class. The Obama campaign even released an advertisement trumpeting McCains omission.”
Where are the reverand wright ads?????
By the way, she’ll not only kick Biden’s butt in a debate, she’d devastate the Marxist Obama on any topic from abortion to the free-market economy, energy, judges, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Russia, whatever! Her conservatism and patriotism will shine through.
There, fixed it.
In most cases, I would agree with you. But for this posse of rank amateurs, I’ll have to make an exception.
Palin should not have wasted her time on the MSM. She should have gone on Bill O’Reilly and other new media outlets. News on Plain hitting the new media outlets (Talk rado) would have boosted ratings for them and shown independents an alternative source of news.
every day that she is not seen nor heard is a day that is wasted....
she has a rally tomorrow....after that, to Arizona for debate camp....
then.....let her run...give her speeches if you need too...let her schmooze with the public...forget the msm....do townhalls and do extended commercials if she has too....
LET SARAH BE SARAH!
This is why I question McCain’s desire to, you know, actually win this thing. Why he allowed anyone with “Bush White House” on their resume even to be envelope-stuffers in the Fargo office is beyond me. They have had their heads handed to them by the media on a daily basis for 4 years and have lost even the first half of a clue in fighting back or changing the subject. Putting them anywhere near Palin is probably depressing her to the point of... well, I don’t know what, but I wouldn’t want to be an in-season animal in Alaska on November 5th if the clowns running the McCain campaign don’t change their tune real quick.
I see the NYT did their token pro-McCain piece for the month... (if you can call an op-ed that)
Exactly , no edit jobs anymore !
