How McCain Wins (McCain unhappy with how staff has handled Palin)
NYT ^ | WILLIAM KRISTOL

Posted on 09/28/2008 8:17:49 PM PDT by Chet 99

-snip-

With respect to his campaign, McCain needs to liberate his running mate from the former Bush aides brought in to handle her — aides who seem to have succeeded in importing to the Palin campaign the trademark defensive crouch of the Bush White House. McCain picked Sarah Palin in part because she’s a talented politician and communicator. He needs to free her to use her political talents and to communicate in her own voice.

I’m told McCain recently expressed unhappiness with his staff’s handling of Palin. On Sunday he dispatched his top aides Steve Schmidt and Rick Davis to join Palin in Philadelphia. They’re supposed to liberate Palin to go on the offensive as a combative conservative in the vice-presidential debate on Thursday.

That debate is important. McCain took a risk in choosing Palin. If she does poorly, it will reflect badly on his judgment. If she does well, it will be a shot in the arm for his campaign.

In the debate, Palin has to dispatch quickly any queries about herself, and confidently assert that of course she’s qualified to be vice president. She should spend her time making the case for McCain and, more important, the case against Obama. As one shrewd McCain supporter told me, “Every minute she spends not telling the American people something that makes them less well disposed to Obama is a minute wasted.”

...she should only do live interviews (to cut out the hatchet people) with local TV in states markets where we need a boost.

I like that. Live (see my post around 179) and not with the network "stars" but with local stars. Sure some local hosts will shoot for a gotcha moment but in the end there more of a chance for locals to see a fairer interview and at the same time make Palin come across as the woman she is - from humble beginnings to amazing success via classic All-American values.

those demands would never be met.

i agree that she should be doing the live stuff though.

after the debate on friday night, i saw biden on 3-4 different shows just to give his quick opinion on how nobama won. where was palin???

CNN was actually joking about it: wolf blitzkreig and anderson crapper both said “don’t hold your breath”.

Wouldn’t it have been great if she called in to them on live tv? they would have been so caught off guard...

She should spend her time making the case for McCain and, more important, the case against Obama.

In order for her to make a case for McCain she has to endorse at least a majority of the issues he supports. That doesn't not bode well for conservatives considering he has agreed with the socialist Democrats on many issues throughout his career to the point of sponsoring legislation with flaming socialists Teddy Kennedy, Joe Lieberman and Russ Feingold on key issues of amnesty for illegal aliens, the fallacy of human induced global warming and restricting free speech under the guise of campaign finance reform respectively.

Who will let the dog out? One of the campaigns greatest assets is nowhere to be found. Didn't she draw 60,000 folks at her rally in Florida a week ago?

We need press and we need it fast. If she comes out swinging we'll get that press. Let's win this race!

"I see the NYT did their token pro-McCain piece for the month... (if you can call an op-ed that)"

NO, you most definitely cannot call an op-ed that. That columnist has NOTHING to do with the paper's official stances, editorial guidance, news reporting, or political outlook. Wm. Kristol is one of two token semi-conservative op-ed columnists at the NY Times (along with David Brooks). Neither is reliably conservative by most FReeper standards but they do add some "diversity" to an otherwise monolithic left-liberal-socialist op-ed stable of columnists, as well as the execrable Editorial Board and news division.

I wish all FReepers would get straight the difference between (1) senior editors/managing editor and editorial board which write 'official' editorials for any paper; (2) news division which usually tracks closely with (1) but not always (big exception is at the Wall St. Journal, with very liberal news division but conservative editorial board), (3) individual opinion columnists, mainly liberal at most papers, although most also have one or two token conservatives so they can pretend to some 'balance', and (4) guest columns from people not associated with a paper.

Every time there is a conservative piece from a (3) or (4) type of source we have to see endless comments here about "wow, the WaPo or NY Times or LA Times etc. has suddenly seen a bit of the light".....

NO, one person's opinion column has absolutely nothing to do with the editorial or news outlook of a paper when it is coming from either a token conservative (3) or a one-off guest op-ed (4).

There is NO RELATION between one lone op-ed by an individual and the paper's overall outlook, bias, and delivery of news. None, nada, zip.

Sorry for the rant, but we have to see these misunderstandings every single time someone like a Kristol or Max Boot or Charles Krauthammer writes an interesting column.

W's media team is astonishly incompetent. I'd be embarrassed to sit at the same table with these wimps and milquetoasts.

I've always tried to be fair with my assessment of Bush but now that we are near the end I have to say that compassion is all fine and dandy but there is a point where your enemies will see you as weak which emboldens them (geez sounds like the Bush rationale in the one bright area - national defense). As amazingly hostile as the press has been in the last eight years there is a point where you don't just use the bully pulpit but you shake it. How about a daily presser at 6:30pm when the national news shows air?

People will respect you if you point out calmly but bluntly the difference in opinion without needing to denigrate.

Actually, let her say her thing about Obama and whatever at rallies. Forget the TV interviews, where the main agenda is to trip her up, not let her get a word in edgewise. It seems that when she gets on track, they do their best to stop her, interrupt her, try to confuse her by slightly changing the question. Forget those jerks. Conservatives know why she was chosen. Let the rest see her speak unbridled. That is when she is at her best.

>>>Let Sarah be Sarah! She’s a kick butt conservative. <<<

I wrote an e-mail to McCain expressing the same thought after hearing Kristol on FOX.

McCain and the Republicans are getting slaughtered in the media on the economic meltdown issue. McCain needs to go on the offensive on the issue, or let Sarah do it!

Do we have a better contact e-mail address direct to the campaign than the one on the donation website which seems more geared to complaints about the donation process on the website??

Yes, I’m beginning to panic...

Relax. I predict the real opening bell will be on Thursday night at the VP Debate. Palin will pitbull the major points of attack, hopefully bating Joe Biden into being his bloviating, fake-hipster self (will he say Ms., Mrs., Governor or opponent? - tune in), ads among the same themes will appear and McCain will follow.

Admin Moderator, something just occurred to me. This is the 2nd time I’ve seen long-dormant accounts come to life. Stargazer was the other one. Is it possible that someone is hacking their way through old accounts & getting the passwords?

>>>McCain’s campaign is on a path towards defeat.<<<

I e-mailed the campaign exactly that sentiment earlier today....

Does anybody have a better way to get to the campaign than the e-mail on the donation website?

It wouldn’t be the first time an account was hacked. But all 8 posts were, um, strange. There’s alos a 19 yr old using his deceased father’s account. He makes snide posts and moves on. It’s been a weird night!

Mike Huckabee should be (should have been by now) sought as a prime confidant, council, and mentor of Sarah Palin.

Oh my God you and your idiot Huckabee. He got his payoff - a show on Fox - where he will prove himself, on a nightly basis, to be the Joe Biden of the squishy, populist right. Any politician that joined forces with Ed Rollins is scum. In a way I guess I should thank Rollins for ending the career of populist-hack Huckabee.

Let's go on the attack! You can't win when you’re always on the defense.

Everyone needs to get the message to the McCain HQ.

ANY administration that allowed an idiot like Scott McClellan to be its Press Secretary doesn’t know s*** about public relations. Period.
