Bet on Israel bombing Iran
NY Daily News ^ | September 27th 2008 | Robert Baer

Posted on 09/28/2008 7:48:08 PM PDT by valkyry1

Are we going to have an October surprise, an attack on Iran by either the Bush administration or by Israel to stop the regime from becoming a nuclear power?

It could happen - and alter the dynamics of the presidential race in the blink of an eye - but only if Israel pulls the trigger. Don't expect the United States to drop bombs anytime soon

The only way Israel bombs Iranian nuke targets in a significant way is if we lend them an entire strike package of B52's, B2's, weapon loads, and all supporting aircraft.

Bob Baer might be right, but he is an attention whore of the highest magnitude.

Well, since you brought it up, what’s your take on how it will effect the campaigns?

It should favor Mccain, but the polls favor Obama right now, so I cant say.

If obambi wins I expect them to hit Iran’s nuke sites. If McCain wins they might hold off.

“Probably not”-—Robert Baer(same article)

I’ve always been a big Bob Baer fan mainly because of the great real life CIA stories. Watch the Charlie Rose interview with the screenwriter of ‘Syrianna’ and I think he discloses that Baer was a double agent for the US and Iran...?? Interesting interview.

If obambi wins, I dont want to say where Israel might go with it, all they have is nukes.

The author of this article seems to be a distraction from my proposition of what it will take to knock out or seriously damage the Iranian nuke complex.

I don’t see anything happening before the election. Afterward - perhaps. Most likely in my mind is Israel taking action and the US making very superficial noises of disapproval after the fact.

Do you think Israel can make an effective strike package out of F15’s and F16’s.

This is an entirely different kettle of fish from their hit on a single above ground Iraqi reactor in 1980.

Israel isn't going anywhere...especially with that new prime minister Livni...

The Israeli government is corrupt to the core....

What is needed is a war with Hezbula before the elections...but i don't think it will happen with this Israeli government.

“This is an entirely different kettle of fish from their hit on a single above ground Iraqi reactor in 1980.”

Agreed.

IIRC we would need 6 carrier groups in the Gulf to support such an operation. That’s a little difficult right now with the USS Enterprise in drydock until next spring-summer.

November 27 2008 is the first new moon after the elections. (Only two new moons between the election and the inauguration)

That would be Thanksgiving Day. And the other new moon is on Christmas Day. Sort of ironic.

Only Russia or the US has the heavy lift air assets needed for this. Israel by themselves would have to nuke the targets.

F15 Strike Eagles (F15I) can carry a pair of AGM-130C with a standoff rage of over 60km. Designed to take out hardened targets (reactors come to mind) a pair of F15Is could damage the existing reactor building enough to delay or stop their use. (Keyholeing - one strike followed by another) the AGM130 is a terminal PGM.

THe F15I can also carry the GBU-28 (AKA BLU-122) which the Hard and Deeply Buried Target Defeat System (HDBTDS) program has shown to be effective against targets likely to be seen (Remember, we just sold a group of these to the IAF),

CAP cover from F16 and SEAD from Wild Weasel F16 hunter-killers groups with paired hammers loaded on IAF F4s can complete the package.

I can recall the nay-sayers and how badly our troops would fair against the 'battle hardened" Iraqi Army. The Iranians were defeated by the Iraqis in battle. Is the Iranian military different today? Yes and no. The well known structural weaknesses remain. Will the IAF strike the facilities? Dunno but I would be close to the TV sometime after the 3rd week in November - cause (IMO) if the IAF/IDF will strike, it will be between 3rd week of November and the 2nd week of December.

Just my 2c worth....

Which is why they might evaporate all of Tehran instead.
