Nervously eyeing the markets' next trading session, key lawmakers in both parties and Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson worked late into the night Saturday trying to close an agreement on a multibillion-dollar government bailout of distressed financial companies.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., told reporters "quite a bit" of progress was being made on a deal that Congress could send to President Bush as early as Monday after votes in both houses.
A key sticking point was how to include a new government-sponsored insurance program demanded by House Republicans as an alternative to devoting the entire $700 billion buying up devalued mortgage-backed securities and other toxic debt from banks and investors.
We're making a lot of headway; I think it's possible to get this thing done tonight," said Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus, D-Mont. "I can't guarantee it," Baucus quickly added.
The House was scheduled to convene at 1 p.m. EDT Sunday and members there were hoping they could vote on a bill by that evening and go home to campaign for re-election. The Senate isn't scheduled to go back into session until Monday

I didn’t hear Blunt sound promising did you?
ditto
And tar and feathering. Why don’t we do this anymore?
No he didn’t. Only Schumer seemed happy. That is scary in and of itself.
He certainly didn’t sound like he was promising anything!
“And tar and feathering. Why dont we do this anymore?”
Just drop Pelosi and Reid in a smoking roofers pot and forget the feathers!
If this keeps up, we may see a comeback....
Must mean he hasn't heard from the Feds yet...
I don’t think there is any way in hell that the GOP is going to agree to a bill that has all that liberal pork in it...Boehner had said that was a non starter, they want it out. So I am thinking that it won’t be in OR the GOP won’t agree.
Okay here’s my take.
Nancy’s voice was breaking...she was not happy. Shumer always has that shit eating grin; can’t tell anything from that. Harry Reid sounded pissed.
Maybe the GOP said “Shove it. You have both houses. Do it without us.”
Dems went to the mics to call their bluff and put pressure on them. When it fails tomorrow, they will do the “We had a deal, but the GOP killed it” routine.
Damn, I wish someone had worn a wire.
NO, he didn’t sound promising. I’m hoping he’s just exhausted from spending hours of torture locked up with the Dem NAZI’s. And I do believe it was torture, 10 liars yelling at you because they’re scared they’ll be tarred and feathered. Let’s hope the House Republicans go over this with a fine tooth comb, because God help them if they join in a sell out.
The GOP has them cornered, they should hold out for their own plan, it is a better one, it is not a bailout but a work out, that was the last I had heard.
