“On Friday, Sept. 26, ACORN President Maude Hurd released the following statement on the first Presidential debate:

“Given the recent turmoil in our financial markets and the ongoing negotiations around a bailout package for Wall Street, it’s not surprising that much of the debate focused on the current economic crisis, which was in many ways predictable. ACORN has been sounding the alarm for years as more and more deregulation stripped protections for consumers and basic safeguards of sound lending.

“WHAT IS ACORN?
ACORN, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, is the nation’s largest community organization of low- and moderate-income families, working together for social justice and stronger communities.

Since 1970, ACORN has grown to more than 350,000 member families, organized in 850 neighborhood chapters in over 100 cities across the U.S. and in cities in Argentina, Peru, Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Canada.
ACORN’s accomplishments include successful campaigns for better housing, schools, neighborhood safety, health care, job conditions, and more.

ACORN members participate in local meetings and actively work on campaigns, elect leadership from the neighborhood level up, and pay the organization’s core expenses through membership dues and grassroots fundraisers.
ACORN has constantly challenged the traditional notions of what a community organization is, and its family of organizations includes two radio stations, a voter registration network, a housing corporation, and several publications.

Would I be correct in assuming that while ACORN was doing all that good community educating, they forgot to tell their clients not to sign a mortgage that was not anywhere near within their means?

There’s plenty of blame to go around, and the people who wrote those mortgages are low down vultures, but the people who signed on the bottom aren’t without blame. Seems like keeping this sort of thing from happening would be *exactly* what community organizers should do, but it’s so much more fun to blame those mean old bankers.
