Immediately following tonight's debate between Republican John McCain and Democrat Barack Obama, SurveyUSA interviewed 1,000 state of Washington adults, of whom 631 watched tonight's debate. Of all debate watchers: 40% say McCain was the clear winner. 38% say Obama was the clear winner. 23% say there was no clear winner.
But: Independents, the most critical, coveted and arguably most dispassionate group of debate watcher, gave by 4:3 the nod to McCain. Republicans by 6:1 say McCain won. Democrats by 6:1 say Obama won. Those two groups offset. Debate watchers say McCain understands Iraq better, McCain understands Iran better, McCain understands Russia better. Debate watchers split on who they trust more on the economy, split on who was more presidential. Overwhelmingly, debate watchers say moderator Jim Lehrer was fair to both candidates. About half wish Lehrer had spent more time on the economy.

buckle up kids
its going to be a wiiiilllllld ride.
If a lib state that’ll goto Obama by 10 points said McCain won, then that settles it for me.
Well, just now I got off the phone with a dear friend of mine who was telling me that her father who is one of those setting on the fence voter, saw the debate and said that McCain came off MORE presidential and was impressed by his canter and answers. FOLKS there is STILL hope!! STAY THE COURSE and pray, fast and seek the Lord for a VICTORY against the supernatural demons aka the RATS!
T%he dems could of put Howdy Doody up on the debate and the Media slimes would say he won.
I totally agree and felt that way even while the debate was still going on. Just like at the GOP convention when McCain’s speech was derided by the press (incl. Fox News) as boring, uninspiring, wooden, etc. Later we found out it was watched by more people than Obama’s and Mac rose in the polls. We will see the same thing here by the middle of next week. McCain looked us straight in the eye and told the TRUTH. Obama posed, preened, simmered, stammered, smirked, and slicked his way through the night. It wasn’t even close.

They did.
This poll is quite remarkable, even if the results are off by a bit. It still shows McCain did better with independents than the talking heads last night would have had us believe. I suppose if Obama came out ahead in a poll from a GOP leaning state, it would be a big headline.
The DNC called me the other night, asking who I would vote for today. Press 1 for Obama, press 2 for McCain. Of course I pressed 2 for McCain, and the call ended.
