A Troubling, But Revealing, Spin On Obama, Race
Hartford Courant ^ | 9/27/2008 | Stan Simpson

Posted on 09/27/2008 8:04:29 AM PDT by markomalley

The white lady at the dry cleaner wanted to talk politics, specifically Barack Obama.

She liked the Illinois senator, she said, but there was just something she couldn't quite express that was preventing her from voting for him.

"I just don't know about him," she blurted.

What, I asked her a bit exasperated, did she not know about the man. He's a 47-year-old African American raised mostly by a single white mom. He graduated from Columbia and Harvard, has been a state and U.S. senator for 11 years, has lived in Hawaii and Indonesia, written two books and endured a bloody slugfest with Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primary. He is a married man with two children. His wife is also an Ivy-League-educated lawyer.

Well, she said, fighting for words, she was concerned that if Obama got elected, somehow it would embolden black people — black men, in particular — to feel entitled.

And what if, she said haltingly, a black president meant a change in the country's power structure? And what if, she continued, this new black power structure decided to treat whites the way whites had historically treated blacks?

Whew. She blew me away with her candor — and ignorance. I appreciated it, actually, because I'm sure there are others who share that viewpoint.

If you have seen Michelle Obama’s Princeton thesis, then you may agree that this lady has a valid fear.

When Ray Nagin was re-elected mayor of New Orleans, he promised a “chocolate city”. And when John Street was elected mayor of Philadelphia he said, “This is OUR city now.” I wonder where that white lady in Stan’s column gets her crazy ideas?

Some good comments after the article on the Courant’s site, by the way.

“Whew. She blew me away with her candor — and ignorance. I appreciated it, actually, because I’m sure there are others who share that viewpoint.”

Most Democrats only support Obama solely because of his skin color.
They have no idea what he actually stands for.
And they have no idea of what our form of government intends the office of President to do.

The way whites have treated blacks?
You mean free..oh I'm sorry affordable housing, no-show jobs, welfare and the like. Where do I sign up if this creep gets in office?

did you see the negative comments in the Courant on this report? almost all very negative—in Democrat land. I only hope all these folks that can’t stand this arrogant, elitist, racist candidate come out to vote.

Now it's time to throw out the usual liberal moral equivalence. If you don't want to vote for Obama because he's black - "Who Are We To Judge??????"

There ya go, I justified it perfectly, now STFU dems.

Typical white dry cleaning lady.

Must the liberal media continue to insult white people?

What do you mean? The inner city is populated with lots of funny, outrageous people- mostly just good-hearted strivers. At least that's what the MSM told me:

Chicago's infamous Cabrini Green Housing Project

The left will tolerate anything except what they perceive to be intolerance.

And what, exactly, does Simpson know about people who aren’t black? Undoubtedly very little.

When the dinosaur media die-off peaks, I expect an explosion in the production of crappy fiction. I mean the properly labeled stuff - not the J-school brand headlined with “based on a true story”. Well, maybe that too, but they won’t be selling it at the newsstands.

Are there any "white dry cleaning" ladies left?

I don’t know about you but when people try to guilt me into doing things their way, I always do the opposite.

Sorry, but it’s hard not to feel this way about Obama, after learning he was a member of a racist “church” for 20 years. Nor to have other misgivings about him, after learning he was friends with the avowed and proud white terrorists Bill Ayers and Bernadine Dorn.

Illinois seems to be a real sink hole of anti-Americanism. How is it that NYC and San Fran get all the grief?

Agreed. Especially considering the reporter. Even if someone really had those emotions or opinions, she isn’t going to express them to a black linebacker-sized reporter.

What a friggin racist thing to print. What a friggin GUILT trip! LMAO. Sorry I am White and was born in Hawaii in 69. I KNOW racism from personal experience. Either you go and do your own thing in life or wallow in the past and never escape it.

Racism is down the list of issues Black America has. The top of the list is the wallowing. Number 2 is consistently describing America as White America and Black America. How about America? How about we STOP delineating ourselves as one or the other? WOW... you mean we can just let go of all that and move on in life? What a concept! Thats a LOT of energy that can be put into changing the conditions of one's life!
