If memory serves I believe that much of the W.W.II deficit was paid off with cheap dollars.

One Internet source said that inflation in 1947 was 14+ percent and the annualized Inflation Rate 1945 - 1951 was 6.31 percent.

So, at an average inflation of 6.31 percent per year for a few years the 10.6 trillion dollars will be around $39 in 2008 dollars. :)
