“Hampton Roads: 48 percent McCain, 44 percent Obama, 7 percent undecided.”

I think McCain is leading Tidewater by more than this considering all the active and retired military in the region who heavily favor Mac.

There's a heavy black population in Portsmouth, Norfolk, Hampton and Newport News to offset McCain's military/veteran advantage.

After some quick math I guess the white vote can still be that divergent with a 3% McCain lead. The overwhelming black vote (about 20% of state population acc to VA census data) for Obama offsets it.

Another surprise in this poll is that McCain is only carrying 81% of the Republicans. That's kinda low. So is Obama's 85% of Dems. That leaves 6% undecided Dems and 9% undecided Repubs. Probably a slight advantage for McCain there.
