House GOP: We have leverage on bailout [Cantor alternative, MBS insurance fund]
The Hill, Washington DC ^ | 2008-09-25 | Jackie Kucinich

Posted on 09/25/2008 6:31:11 PM PDT by rabscuttle385

House Republicans say they have significant leverage on the revamped bailout package, claiming that Democrats will scramble for votes unless they make changes to it.

Republicans in the lower chamber are balking at the bailout package, saying that Democrats will be solely responsible for the ramifications of what they see as a flawed compromise.

Reps. Eric Cantor (R-Va.) and Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) are leading an effort by House Republicans to circulate the set of principles to their colleagues and like-minded Democrats, according to a senior Republican.

.....

The GOP’s “economic rescue principles” advocate adopting a mortgage insurance approach to solve the financial problems facing the country, according to a fact sheet obtained by The Hill.

Roughly half of all mortgage-backed securities (MBS) are insured by the government, and House Republicans have advocated that the other half also become insured by the Treasury Department.

No permanent ban on drilling or sneaking in additional pork that is not absolutely necessary!

Knowing the rabid critters occupying the Capitol, they will do it. Hell, if we're really unlucky, someone might try and sneak the Dream Act or an amnesty in there.

Yeah, she is the daughter of Dennis. As long as her writing isn't bad or slanted I don't care.

I support it - oppose the bailout!

Newt was just saying on H&C that the RATS are terrified of pushing the bailout through the House without the Pubs on board, since they would then have to be 100% responisible for it. They need the Pubs for political cover. Even though they have the votes, they won’t pass it without Pub support. So yeah, the House Pubs do have leverage.

Yep. Adopting a free market rescue plan in place of the Big Government socialist bailout would be a huge step forward. I've made it clear that saving America is important to me than winning the election. Its called conservatism.

I like the plan to, at first glance—assuming the report was accurate. Like any other plan, it needs to be “vetted”, but I would like to hear some reasons pro and con. Sounds like Pelosi has no idea what to do, otherwise she would have dissed it off the bat. The fact that even that old Frisco nutcase would bring it to the floor with sufficient Republican support is somewhat cheering.

Are these people working through the night? Because they damned well better be.

The bailout needs to be fixed. There has to be crireria for bailouts, and oversight. The idea of the Secratary of Treasury an unaccountable Economic Emperor is absurd. But we unfortunately do need it. When every economist, including conservatives like Larry Kudlow say the alternative is a general collapse of the economy, we better listen.

On the good side, eventually this could end up making trillions for the US treasury in the long run. The challenge will be to prevent Congress from spending it on new programs. With trillions of dollars in unfunded liabilities looming, we will need it.

I think a GOP bill also helps for the fall elections. Now we’ve got Bush and Dems agreeing on “90%” of the principles of the bailout bill. Bush = Obama Ha ha.

This is good “triangulation” for the GOP away from Bush. And the end result may be a lot better plan.

If they can do it without $700 billion of our money, great! We'll have drawn a line in the sand no matter what happens in November.

I say let the stock market crash if the alternative is socialism. The free market will sort itself out- it always does. Mind you, I’m not calling for a Hoover-style tight monetary policy, but there’s a middle ground that doesn’t involve pure socialism.
