Only if you consider a government monopoly insignificant. From 1938 to 1968 Fannie Mae was a government agency that had a monopoly on the secondary mortgage market.

In 1968 part of Fannie Mae was spun off as a private company. In 1970 Freddy Mac was created as a private company to provide competition for Fannie Mae.

I’ve posted about an impending housing/mortgage crisis for a couple of years here. Anyone familiar with the Austrian economic school of Mises and Hayek could have spotted the credit bubble. National Review, a journal Limbaugh claims to have read for decades, used to feature Austrian analysis regularly.
