Reid to McCain: Don't Come Back to Capitol September 24, 2008 5:14 PM
A Democrat tells ABC News that, in a phone call late this afternoon, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., told Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., that it would NOT be helpful for him to come back to Washington, D.C., to work on the Wall Street bailout bill.
McCain this afternoon suspended his campaign and said he would skip the first presidential debate in order to return to Capitol Hill to work on the log-jammed Bush administration legislation, which, as of Wednesday afternoon, was in peril.
McCain had phoned Reid to ask about the prospects of him, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., and others to sit down and work together on hammering out a bipartisan proposal.
"Sorry," Reid said to him, a Democrat close to Reid says.
Reid then read McCain the statement he had just put out: "This is a critical time for our country," says the Reid statement. "While I appreciate that both candidates have signaled their willingness to help, Congress and the administration have a process in place to reach a solution to this unprecedented financial crisis. I understand that the candidates are putting together a joint statement at Sen. Obamas suggestion. But it would not be helpful at this time to have them come back during these negotiations and risk injecting presidential politics into this process or distract important talks about the future of our nations economy. If that changes, we will call upon them. We need leadership; not a campaign photo op. If there were ever a time for both candidates to hold a debate before the American people about this serious challenge, it is now.
A source close to Reid said McCain didn't have much to say after that. Reid, the source says, thinks McCain's maneuver is a gimmick born from bad poll numbers and the fact that "debate prep must not be going very well."

UPDATE: McCain senior adviser Mark Salter emails: "Yesterday, Harry Reid said that consensus couldn't be achieved without John McCain's leadership. John stepped up and is providing that leadership. Now Senator Reid seems to have changed his mind for reasons we'll let him explain. But what he should understand is that this isn't about Harry Reid or John McCain or Barack Obama. It's about the American people and, in the words of Warren Buffet, the financial Pearl Harbor they're facing. John's committed to doing his part to help avert that calamity. We hope Senator Reid is too."
McCain to Reid ,,,,,, let me see how did Pamela Andersin put it .......... #*+K it Harry .
Dump Reid in 2010!
Last I heard, McCain is still a Senator (ok, so is Obama)
it really is their JOB TO BE THERE!
Reid is afraid that if McCain comes in something might get done in the do nothing legislative. Why on earth should Obambi and McCain be flapping their gums when their help is needed for their day job, which is working in the Senate, not running for President. The Dems have their priorities upside down.
COUNTRY FIRST!
McCain is doing the right thing.
“McCain needs to hammer home....”
Whatever that means.
If the press wont report it, you can hammer stuff home until you break the nail, it isnt going to matter.
You either go bold or go home.
That is leadership.
I would email his office to let him know how I feel about this. Unfortunately, “You’re An Idiot” isn’t one of the subject choices.
This dirty rotten no-good SOB...
Tar and feathers would be too good for him.
This is becoming my usual response these days.
To Reid: Go f*** yourself!
Pinky already has said that he hates McCain...I can hear his blood pressure spiking from here...LOL
Its his JOB as a senator and Bambi too . They need to be involved in drawing up a deal and VOTING Yes or NO and not issuing press releases .
I noticed how you don’t criticize Bambi comment which was call me if you need me ???
The McCain haters have come rolling out of there HOLES Again!
I sorta see McCain as Gandalf here where he excorcizes the King of Rohan i.e.Congress , Reid would be Wormtongue.
I do not know about this. I do not trust Reid as far as I could throw. Frankly, I think Obama always puts self above solving problems that are critical to this nation’s economy.
But,” why would a socialist, marxist lover like Obama even care about our free market economy”, which is a concept all socialists and marxists hate? I think that is the real answer and reason why Obama wants to avoid doing his real current elected job.
Since when is “doing your job” a political stunt? The reason OHO doesn’t return and ‘help’ with this huge debacle is because he doesn’t KNOW WHAT TO DO. He has to think on it. And what is his response? He won’t go back because it is more important to debate than do his job that he was elected to do.
He has never done his job. What bills has he put through Congress... what exactly has he done... other that flap his lips and grandstand?
I'm all in favor of electing a whole new batch of 535 congressmen and senators and getting rid of the entire lot we now have in DC. A new group sure as heck couldn't do any worse. I will not vote for any incumbent!
Exactly. Because Harry, Nobama and Pelousy don’t understand that concept, they can’t conceive of it as someone who does.
I think what Harry was trying to do was score some points for the Messiah by first putting it out there that McCain was needed to make this bill work, all the while figuring McCain would be too busy campaigning to come back. That way when the bill failed or sputtered, Harry would shove his ugly mug back before the cameras and blame McCain for the economy. Unfortunately, McCain, for all his faults, LOVES his country and was ready to come back immediately. That didn’t fit with Harry’s plan and now he looks more like an idiot that he normally does. If he keeps lowering the bar on idiocy, it’s going to start sticking out of the ground in China soon.
That is right, both candidates decided to remain senators through the campaign, so McCain IS doing his job and Hussein is playing hooky big time, it is too beneath him being a Senator now, it is “below” his pay grade THIS time. To me he is looking elitist beyond belief.
stfu Harry dingy Reid
