I am amazed at how many political tin ears there are on this site.

What is the overarching theme of this election cycle?

Simply put its disgust at business as usual by the electorate. One side has put up a schlub who’s going to do nothing but if elected, pretending he wont, and another who’s defied convention and expediency his entire career, but faces blowback because he’s from the party that’s had the executive branch for the last 8 years.

Trying to compare this election to 1996 in any way shape or form is ludicrous. This is not an incumbent race, and its not a 3 way race.. and just for the record, Bill Clinton owes both his terms to Ross Perot, he never topped 50% of the vote.

This is just one more time McCain is doing the unconventional and unexpected, and put deeds behind rhetoric. If Fauxbama stays on the campaign trail while McCain is in DC working on this, Fauxbama loses, period. He and his surrogates going to daily have to try to defend to middle america why he’s not in DC. After all this is the guy who’s claimed (without ever actually doing it) that he can bring people together.

The above, and the rest of what you wrote in that post say pretty much all that needs to be said about this. Of course, that means I will ad some meaningless additional thoughts of my own:

1. If he wants to be President, I imagine he does not want to take office just as a Harry Reid/Nancy Pelosi-authored bomb detonates, so it is just commonsense to get to D.C. and stir the pot himself.

2. This crisis is the news. Ads do not mean anything up against actually headlining the current 24/7 news event.

3. This decision poses an "interesting" strategic dilemma for Teleprompter Jesus and his Astroturfers. As we have seen previously, they do not react well when the script is tossed out.
