Oh, but he is a maverick! This is from the Republican Party's 2008 platform:
We do not support government bailouts of private institutions. Government interference in the markets exacerbates problems in the marketplace and causes the free market to take longer to correct itself. We believe in the free market as the best tool to sustained prosperity and opportunity for all.
What else do you call someone who rejects a conservative party platform? Oh wait, I think the term is "liberal."

He really is pretty conservative. For one thing, now that Zell Miller (D-Georgia) has quit, McCain is more conservative than any Democratic senator by a significant margin. (Of course, Zell was more conservative than most Republicans, never mind McCain). The problem is that his ego gets in the way, and he gets to thinking he knows better and that anyone who opposes his position can go straight to hell. The polls are our way of beating him with a stick to remind him that he works for us, and not the other way around.

The problem is this - what happens if he gets into the White House - and decides that he's going to do whatever he wants to do? I prefer McCain over Obama, but I suspect conservatives are going to have to spank him just as hard as we did Bush, just to make sure he doesn't get too far out of line on things like amnesty, big government and so on. The heartburn won't be over even if McCain wins.
