2,089,351 Reasons to Put Down the Keyboard After a 26 Hour Shift [FR status report]

Posted on 09/24/2008 9:38:37 AM PDT by John Robinson

Edited on 09/24/2008 10:19:29 AM PDT by John Robinson. [history]

Well, the good news first. After installing three very sweet machines and new networking equipment, FR is geared up for the onslaught of traffic we anticipate during this election cycle. All that is left is some tuning and bringing online another database server.

The bad news: I goofed horribly this morning and wiped the articles table, a file that stores crucial information for displaying articles.

Fortunately, the data is backed up. I'm working on restoring it, but it may possibly take the rest of the day to bring it back fully.

So don't touch that dial!

UPDATE: Restored a couple million old articles. Still working on the most recent, which need to be restored from incremental backups (very slow!)

My comments page says at the top:
“Article database had a major malfunction, working on restoring it. — John”

Great, now I have ‘that drill seargent’ from ‘that movie’ stuck in my head saying “What is your major malfunction?!”
Just don’t use the rest of the script lines on it, databases don’t like having eyes scooped out.

As my computer geek hubby says,
“It’s a bite to fix when it’s someone else’s mistake. It’s a learning experience when it’s your own.”

Good luck and great job!

Constant Comment, brew 10 minutes. Earl Grey about 4 to 6 minutes. Depends on the brand of Earl Grey.

One bag at 10 minutes is, um, very eye-opening.

Be afraid, be very afraid. Yes, the Foxhole host and hostess actually made it and drank it. Samwolf loved it I on the other hand wonder if I felt a hole burning in my stomach! I love you Darksheare but none for me thanks. :-)

Earl Grey always tasted like furniture polish to me; maybe I’m doing something wrong.

No, it is there, but taking considerably more time than anticipated to properly restore (a week?) I am currently investigating an interium solution for a partial restore while a full restore continues in the background.
