Oh my goodness...I got a lump in my throat reading that. Thank you!
We truly live in a divided country, in which there is little hope of reconciliation. The socialists have a vision of the future that is utiopian, authoritarian and globalist, and they will not ever give up on that dream. We just want to be left alone to live our lives, follow the Constitution, enable and ennoble free enterprise, and maintain the greatness that was won with so much sacrifice by our forefathers here in this great nation.
The next few decades may see a civil war. We are already in a Cold Civil War, as described by Mark Steyn. Only political victory by American patriots, followed by resolute and sustained recovery of the institutions that teach Americans, the educational and journalistic institutions, entertainment, literary, music, structures of our land, will avert a final leftist takeover of this country, and imposition of their will by authoritarian means.
Leftism must be defeated and then marginalized. It cannot be accommodated or bargained with, it always advances, relentlessly and pitilessly. It, like Islam, is anathema to American democracy. One or the other will survive.
God speed, Bill Whittle.
I’ll grant you that he preferred applicability to allegory:
“I much prefer history, true or feigned, with its varied applicability to the thought and experience of readers. I think that may confuse “applicability” with “allegory”; but the one resides in the freedom of the reader and the other in the purposed domination of the author.”
but preferred and “was a great fan of” may not be the same thing. I’ve just grown a bit wary of anyone, even people on our side, trying to employ LOTR or JRRT as a political pawn, because the other side has been trying to do so since the ‘60s. Doesn’t take too much searching to find lefties arguing that industry = Saruman, or pagany types styling themselves after elves or Lothlorien, people (incorrectly) equating pot and ‘pipeweed,’ etc.
One may as well argue that Shakespeare would have favored action in Iraq based on Hamlet’s soliloquy (or argue the opposite based on the conclusion of the play).
It’s no big problem and it’s an excellent article; I just think that any editorial is “purposed domination” (attempting to convince the reader) and shoehorning great works into political molds is not the ideal use for them.
MANY thanks for the ping! This was excellent - sounds like his other work is worth checking out.
Thank you ecurbh!! Appreciate it!
Excellent point!
“It may not be factually true that Nero fiddled while Rome burned, the saying has passed into common usage because the image as the ring of truth to it: time and time again, the good and decent common people have manned the walls of the city, and have been ready to give their lives in its defense, only to discover too late that some silk-robed son of a bitch has snuck out of the palace at midnight and thrown open the gates to the barbarians outside.”
And, we all know who the “silk-robed son of a bitch” is!
Thanks for the post. Please put me on your Bill Whittle ping list.
Please, see my post #2 for the description of this ping list. Its not author specific. I like Bill Whittle very much, and most likely will continue to ping to many of his essays, but this ping list is not limited to Whittle’s articles. Let me know you decision, please. Thanks
Count me in, please.
You are already on this list! Thanks
I found that out later, thanks.
