The U.S. Geological Service issued a report in April ('08) that only scientists and oilmen knew was coming, but man was it big.
It was a revised report (hadn't been updated since '95) on how much oil was in this area of the western 2/3 of North Dakota; western South Dakota; and extreme eastern Montana ...
Check THIS out:
The Bakken is the largest domestic oil discovery since Alaska's Prudhoe Bay, and has the potential to eliminate all American dependence on foreign oil.

Thanks for the link. Revives my hope in technology.
Energy Information Administration is a DOE.gov, not some some investment group.
They say 503 Bbbl. I'm inclined to believe them.
Are you looking at the old estimates and not the ones based on improved technology?

Even wilder is this part of recovering/refining heavy crude:

I'd love to work in that area, maybe I'll drop some hints to my companies bosses or find a company to work for that does that kinda stuff.
We can do anything if we try to. Put Sarah Barracuda in charge of it.
There seems to be confusion here. The EIA get their information from the USGS.
The news reports of a couple months ago use the lower figure. I did see the higher figure on the EIA report as you said.
Here are the latest USGS figures I have read:

I believe that the larger number may be the USGS number enlarged by a factor of 10.
Hope I’m Wrong.
The April 2008 announcement of the USGS was about 4.3 Billion barrels.
I was ecstatic about 500 Billlion barrels.
I haven’t queried either of the organizations about the discrep.
Holy s$%t! This changes the whole game! In situ refining? Welcome Canada, the new petro-power (and goodbye Middle East)!
Well, I'm confused!
I believe that the larger number may be the USGS number enlarged by a factor of 10.
Hope Im Wrong.
Even if you aren't it's still a pretty respectable amount of oil.
We’ll take all he black gold we can get.
I hope it does turn out to be 500 Billion barrels.
You and I are not confused; it is the EIA and the USGS need to get on the same page.
:)
This works for oil in addition to natural gas? If that’s the case then yes, this could double the reserves of a company like Penn West or Baytex or Apache.
Hardly been a secret around here:
