Watching the video, I would say that it was the NY Times' bottom of the gutter, sexist political whisper campaign that was being roasted. I thought it was funny.
And you didn’t get the point which was that the Times is willing to go down that rat hole without any shred of proof. This skit was a complete and utter hit job on the NY Times, it’s journalistic standards and the quality of the people who work for them. People who are out of touch, think they are sooooo sophisticated when they are anything but and hell, they even had a guy working for them called Karl Marx.
