Pit Bulls attack, kill 4-month-old ["They ripped" her "to shreds," baby now identified.]
KVBC, WorldNow ^ | 15SEP08 | Jesse Corona reporting

Posted on 09/20/2008 8:52:04 PM PDT by familyop

It was a tragic scene in North Las Vegas involving a baby and two dogs. A four-month-old was attacked by two Pit Bulls. The dogs were attacking so viciously police say they had to shoot them dead upon arriving at the scene.

Residents in the neighborhood near Cheyenne and Martin Luther King say they are shocked but not surprised that it happened. Neighbors tell News 3 the two Pit Bulls were full grown dogs and when the baby girl arrived at the house four months ago they began to display aggressive behavior towards the child and anyone who held her.

"We knew that someone had shot somebody," a neighbor named Gloria told News 3.

The shots that Gloria and her neighbors heard was North Las Vegas police shooting the two dogs still on the attack.

"I look in. You could see the dogs laying dead," another neighbor, Jason Howell said. The shots prompted Howell to run to his neighbor's house to see if he could help. He says that what he saw will haunt him. "There are some peculiars I don't even want to discuss," said Howell.

Howell says other neighbors have commented on the dogs' aggressive behavior. "You don't have Pit Bulls around children, period," Howell said.

Also according to neighbors, the child's grandmother was at the home babysitting when the attack happened.

Neither police nor neighbors know what sparked the attack. "You have an aggressive breed dog, a Pit Bull and a child in the house. They ripped it to shreds," Howell said. What could the child possibly have done to instigate that? I have a daughter who is 18 months old. And the look on the father's face is something I'll never forget, ever. That's all I have to say."

The grandmother who was in the house sustained injuries. She was taken away by ambulance.

It was just a couple of months ago that a local animal control officer was attacked by three pit bulls. In July the officer responded to a home in North Las Vegas.

According to reports the dogs were loose in a neighbors yard near Centennial and Lamb. The officer managed to get away from the dogs and locked herself in her vehicle.

In April two 5-year-old boys were attacked by two Pit Bulls outside a home near Vegas Valley and McLeod. One was bitten in the face, the other in the leg. Both dogs were put to euthanized..

That's great, of course, if you're interested in finding someone to hold responsible.

Myself, I think finding someone to punish is too little, too late...why should something like this have to happen before a dog can be removed?

What would you suggest? Drive around the hood looking for thug with their dogs on chains? You realize that "vicious" breeds go through cycles based on what's cool right (ie Doberman's have fallen somewhat out of style)?

So after you get your government bans in place and destroy ten million loyal family dogs for every one that's abused til it's a monster, the thugs will just be chaining Great Danes and Mastiffs and friendly, PC yellow Labs up in their backyards. Once the media decides those are vicious, do we ban Lassie too?

Come to think of it, this is eerily familiar. Ban vicious-looking "assault" weapons even though they're perfectly safe in the hands of millions of owners, because of the handful of thugs that act like thugs. Confiscating similar tools from law-abiders *always* works right? Those thugs will never switch to the next most convenient tool right?

Startling a sleeping dog in the dark by stepping on its tail doesn’t seem like a good idea regardless of breed.

Only if you had the choice between a pit bull or say a fox terrier, which would YOU prefer to startle?

When I was 3 we had a big Rhode Island rooster that roamed the farm... and it would attack anyone who crossed its path... there was something wrong with that bird... and since I seen many stories of nutty roosters that attack.

How many folks got bloodied or died from the rooster attacks?

Just give him time.

Jusy how long do you think I should give him, jackass. How about 12 years? That's how old he was when he passed away from liver disease earlier this year.

Don't lecture me, you ignorant clown.

A pit bull that size is as lethal as a loaded gun. If he has all his teeth, he’s a loaded gun.

See #204, jerk.

The lions are in a wildlife Park in Downtown Cave Junction. They are regulated and well maintained. The tiger was a personal pet of a neighbor outside of Grants Pass,Oregon she had to get permits but was not routinely inspected.( she moved near me, I didn’t move near her, she had the cat legally so it was none of my business.)
I take issue with the idea that any dog just snaps. If a person thinks that their dog is wonderful
and not aggressive and one day it attacks, they are lying to you, to themselves or both. Except in cases of a medical problem, which is fairly rare, there are always signs of aggression. Dominance issues, jealous behaviors, possessive behaviors with food or toys, and so on up to growling or biting someone. It never comes out of the blue. I raised and trained German shep. hybrids for 12-13 years. I know a little about canine behavior.

That's what owning a pit bull is all about: the owners' personalities and desire for fear in others. Your comment is also very revealing under the title of this thread.

Thank you, "Trailerpark Badass," for revealing the keyboard courage of another pit bull owner. We are well aware of why some people choose to keep those animals.

"Keyboard courage," lol, that's funny, Mr Self-Styled Neighborhood dog vigilante.

Physician, heal thyself.

People want to insult my recently-deceased dog, I will reply in kind. Perhaps they'd like to tell a distraught 4 year-old what an evil dog he lost.

but you're a silly fool.

No need to ban pit bulls, just pass a law that the owner is responsible for their dog’s actions as if they had committed the act with their own hands, or... teeth.

I figured she’d have to have some kind of permit and if people like Roy want to take their lives into their own hands with a wild animal, more power to them.

Well then perhaps several pit bulls have some kind of as of yet unidentified medical problem because I keep hearing about and reading stories just here in the Atlanta area about pit bulls that indeed snap or behave in such a way as in this article, but not always with these warning signs but these same results. Maybe the owners need to be more alert?

Something’s going on.

And keep in mind I don’t blame the pit bulls. It’s not like they have control over their lack of control in a worst case scenario. Obviously if they’re abused and so forth that’s one thing but I DO wonder when they have pups if something isn’t passed down?

It would help if people responsiible for fighting these dogs had steeper penalties for one.

FRiends, here’s an old song about a man who was a little too unnaturally close to his “mangy mutt” that ran away.

I'm not the only one snuffing the problem out. It's a community effort. Besides terrorizing kids and old folks, pit bulls have been chasing cattle. The meth zombies only cry about it and move to the cities. ;-)

LOL, maybe you should move to a nicer neighborhood.

I wouldn't know where to find "meth zombies," but if you have them living next door, by all means, do what you have to do.

"I take issue with the idea that any dog just snaps."

Most of the pit bulls killing and seriously mauling children and adults were cute, loving family and neighborhood pets for years prior to the sudden attacks without warnings.

The enduring agony of a pit bull rampage (yet another account--fascinating but saddening)
