GOP opposes letting prisoners register to vote

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — The Alabama Republican Party opposes a drive to register inmates to vote so they can cast absentee ballots from inside state prisons, with the state GOP chief saying Thursday there needs to be safeguards against voter fraud.

State Rep. Mike Hubbard, chairman of the party, told Corrections Commissioner Richard Allen in a letter delivered by e-mail that the party supports the idea of registering more people to vote, but not when it comes to prisoners.

"Furthermore, I have concerns about potential issues with how this effort is being monitored to ensure no form of voter fraud occurs," Hubbard wrote. He asked Allen to outline the prison system's plans for preventing fraud.

Prison spokesman Brian Corbett said the commissioner was working on a response and declined further comment.

Hubbard's letter came two days after The Associated Press reported that a coalition of groups led by a community activist, the Rev. Kenneth Glasgow, began registering inmates to vote in state lockups this week. Nearly 80 filled out registration forms in two days.

I thought it was against the law for prisoners/felons/cons to vote.

Felons do not have the right to vote.

But the rats want the felon, illegal and dead vote.

I believe only Maine allows it at this point but state laws vary. I’ve got a felony record (drunk driving) and was legal to vote as soon as I was off probation.

State laws do vary. Washington also restores the vote when off probation. We know a woman who had her vote restored a few years ago. BTW, she votes Republican.

People who think convicts sit in prison and dream of getting a chance to vote aren’t being realistic. In fact people who are likely to return to prison tend not to be voters. People like myself who want to get straightened out tend to become conservative and stay clean.

That said, giving inmates a vote is a bad idea. They’ll vote for a change of pace and they’ll vote for whoever promises to get them out of prison the soonest.

At least in Virginia, their voting rights are never restored...and that state is one of the closest right now...

SOME good news at least...

I thought the same. Once you are convicted you supposedly lose that right.

Felons are an important part of the Democrat Party base.

What is the political affiliation among felons who successfully complete their parole? I certainly wouldn't expect them to vote Democrat at anything near the rate of those whose debt to society is as yet unpaid; indeed, I wouldn't be terribly surprised if as a group they would be more inclined to vote Republican (criminals who haven't learned the concept of personal responsibility would seem unlikely to complete their paroles; those who have learned the concept would be more likely to vote Republican).

I don’t know. I was really referring to those in prison. Also, sad to say, most ex cons there are black (someone correct me if Im wrong) and 91% of blacks are voting Obama.

And before anyone gets mad and calls me a racist, please note that I was stating facts... not an opinion.

You won't get any argument here.

That's my experience exactly (post7). When I was still stupid, voting for anyone was the last thing on my mind. Deciding to be a responsible adult led me to voting and conservatives.
