They are not trying to make pre-emptive excuses for losing. They are attempting to intimidate in advance the feeble-willed, uncommitted voter, who doesn't want to be a "racist" oh horrors, -- to insure victory.

Yeah, if he weren’t black,he wouldn’t be in the race. He is way above his pay grade. Go back to the senate and make some money.
Blacks vote 90+ percent for liberal black candidates. On the negative side whites still vote up to 60 or 70 percent for white candidates, obvious racism.
I think that is what Gergen means.

Race IS the biggest issue in this campaign. Most Americans would LOVE to elect a black man or a woman as president. Problem is Obama is unelectable because of his extremism and utter lack of a track record in anything other than graft.
By statistical analysis only 6% of whites wold not vote for a black man. This is more than offset by in excess of 90% of blacks who will vote for any black person regardless of any other factor.
Why is Obaqma not a runaway? Because he can not be trusted.

2004: Kerry won, Bush stole election with help of Diebold voting machines.

There’s just one problem here Mr. Gergen. Republicans and conservatives have their usual reasons to avoid voting for Obama. But there aren’t enough cons and pubs to elect McCain. If Obama loses due to racism, it will have to be due to independent and/or Democrat racism. Put that on your forehead and comb it over.
