Memo to US Secret Service: Net proxy may pinpoint Palin email hackers Not quite Anonymous

By Dan Goodin in San Francisco

Memo to law enforcement investigators tracking down who broke into Sarah Palin's Yahoo email account: Gabriel Ramuglia might be a good place to start.

The 25-year-old webmaster and entrepreneur is the operator of Ctunnel.com (http://ctunnel.com/), the browsing proxy service used by the group that hacked into the vice presidential candidate's personal email account and exposed its contents (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/09/17/anonymous_hacks_sarah_palin/) to the world. While he has yet to examine his logs, he says there's a good chance they will lead to those responsible, thanks to some carelessness on their part.

"Usually, this sort of thing would be hard to track down because it's Yahoo email, and a lot of people use my service for that," he told El Reg in a phone interview. "Since they were dumb enough to post a full screenshot that showed most of the [Ctunnel.com] URL, I should be able to find that in my log."

Gabriel Ramuglia

Any association to the Zerobama camp per chance? Just asking.

I’ll bet that will be cause for some nervousness at DU.

The Secret Service has jurisdiction over Federal level wire fraud cases(or, at least, thats what they told me when they visited my NOC) so you can bet they are well along on this. The perp should be getting a visit real soon. They’ll probably wait until he goes to work(whatever that may be) because, even if he bails, businesses(owners) tend to get really nervous when a Secret Service ID is presented. I would pay good money to see this guy wetting his pants when they come for him. I really hope he has a great job to lose.

May be worth a ping.

Even if what is said in the article works out, if the people doing this had half a brain, they would have been going through proxies to act from the final proxy. Doing so would make the logs of the final proxy near irrelevant.

I’m sure this is what they did, since they did a screen of the URL. Unless they were truly careless as the article implies.

________

I have read more than a dozen posts about taking it to the streets, and one talked about being armed and another spoke about his gun.

I hope the Secret Service has a couple of people monitoring DU.

This was a non-partisan attack and had nothing to do with democrats.

Hahaha!

If this dufus rubico actually did break into Gov. Palin’s account like he says he did, and he only used one proxy as he says he did...well...let’s put it this way:

rubico = EPIC FAIL

“...it finally set in, THIS internet was serious business, yes I was behind a proxy, only one, if this s*** ever got to the FBI I was f***ed, I panicked, i still wanted the stuff out there but I didn’t know how to rapidsh** all that stuff, so I posted the pass on /b/, and then promptly deleted everything, and unplugged my internet and just sat there in a comatose state...”

Yes rubico. I’m sure curling up in a fetal position and staring at your blank monitor will fix EVERYTHING.

Well, it may require some effort to track down IP addresses, but I would say that it can be done if you put the time into it. I believe that Internet companies are required by law to keep logs for several years. So they will be able to track the guilty party.

Sorry...but that’s just not true.

If rubico is the hacker, he makes his motivations clear:

“I read though the emails… ALL OF THEM… before I posted, and what I concluded was anticlimactic, there was nothing there, nothing incriminating, nothing that would derail her campaign as I had hoped, all I saw was personal stuff, some clerical stuff from when she was governor…. And pictures of her family”

Unless you believe that Republicans have a vested interest in “derail[ing] her campaign”, I think it’s pretty clear that this person supports the democrat ticket.

He would have gone after Obama or biden in the same way.

Actually there was a conversation about going after Obama or biden next to make O’Riellys head explode out of confusion.

Yeah, well said. I don't see why there would be any doubt, this is the Dems play book:

When they lose, it's election fraud (after going through candidates emails, voting for dead people, etc.).

When they win, it's the will of the people (all of the down and dirty tricks paid off).

Huh? So it must have been a registered Republican? I don’t think who did it is with the O team, but I’m sure he’s a Dem, in fact I’d bet anything on it. It wouldn’t make sense that he was upset that he didn’t find anything in the emails.

I think he means that they probably weren’t ordered by the campaign or the DNC, but it’s obvious that they politcally are on the rat side or even registered dems... acting on their, but thinking it would benefit the rats.

I’m far from being the worlds greatest hacker but if I did this they would not be able to track me down.

First I would make the connection from a random wifi hotspot, I would get on the net using the Tor system and possibly one or two other proxies. When I had the data I would then transfer it elsewhere while still behind the proxies and the anonymity of the wifi hotspot. Then I would scrub the HD in the laptop and re-load the ghost image of my drive once back home. Overkill probably but better safe than sorry.

If you think this is bad, wait to see what happens if Obama loses.
