University of California?
How is it legal for a public (i.e. taxpayer-funded) university system to donate to a political candidate?
Yeah, it was all serious until I switched over to Cynthia McKinney, and saw her bank-busting $2,300 contribution!!!! LOL
WTF? How can a university contribute to anyone? Seems like that should be illegal.
I have a feeling that a lot of these contributions are more for “protection money” than anything else.
Harvard donated $435,769 to the Obama campaign?
Good information for alumni to have the next time the university asks for money.
Better ad moveon.org to the trouble list
I will look it up, but I believe that the University itself can not contribute. The $611,207 is the total given by people who list U of C as their employer. I am pretty sure the US Army did not give $103,618 to John McCain (post #18).
Ah, that explains much - thanks for the clarification! :-)
Keep in mind that the contributions come from the organizations’ PACs, not from the organizations themselves.
Isn’t University of California a state college? Can they legally donate to ANY candidate?
My God, it’s all Lawyers and old people. Unreal!
Do you have a similar listing of companies contributing to the McCain campaign? It’d be interesting to see a side-by-side comparison.
Oops - also, I see a cut up credit card coming soon. Chase, you miserable B*st*rds!
I can’t believe moveon has not donated to McCain.
Wow, the next 50 days are going to drive me to drinking.
Since corporations can’t give to federal campaigns, is this the list of employers of individual donors? Or is it corporate donations to the parties ?
I want to know what in the hell the U of CA system is giving any money to anyone... It’s my taxpayer dollars... This should be investigated.

The financial firms give to both campaigns to gain access. They can be pretty confident that a republican administration will do the right things for Wall Street, so the money to McCain is just a door opener.
If Obama wins, the big financial firms won’t just need access to the President for a few minutes, they will need legislation changed provide them with loop holes. To get politicians to put themselves out there they need a lot more leverage.
Lehman Brothers $370,524 - Figures
