Find an NRA safety course in your area. Take it. Sign up your family members as well.

Learn the law as it applies to you.

Find a firearm that suits your situation. Acquire it and store it safely.

Practice with said firearm until proficient. Then practice some more.

Have fun shooting and don’t worry about imaginary riots. Your first line of defense is common sense. The very last thing you want to do is shoot someone.

Absolutely correct.

Take the NRA course with your family members before you buy anything.

Be prepared to spend more money for training and practice than for the initial weapon purchase.
