My take is that it has been around a LONG time in that format and is a top site on the internet. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

Why is it that you apparently need visual bells and whistles to interpret Drudge's simple page? Maybe YOU think it "sucks," but I think it's TEN THOUSAND TIMES BETTER than the usual busy, crowded, crappy, too-clever-by-half, scattered, disorganized and VERY FRUSTRATING TO NAVIGATE typical web page of "popular" news sites.
PLEASE, the design of Druedge's site is better than most, if you'd only start thinking with your head instead of your "design" ego. You can look at it and see what's happening in a glance, and you sure as hell can't do that with the cluttered artsy-graphic-self-conscious "pro" sites you seem to prefer.
