CHICAGO - In a presidential race turning increasingly negative, Democratic nominee Barack Obama drew on editorial comments from U.S. newspapers and magazines Monday to accuse John McCain of running a dishonest campaign with some of the "sleaziest ads" ever seen.
Obama's running mate, Sen. Joe Biden, said McCain was "launching a low blow a day" and went on to say he stands "with George Bush firmly in the corner of the wealthy and well-connected."
Obama, flying to Colorado to begin a swing through contested Western states, leveled his charges in a new television commercial that aggressively pushes back against charges by McCain, the GOP presidential nominee. Obama has been under increasing pressure from Democrats to strike back harder at McCain, who has taken a slight lead in national polls. Some leading Republicans faulted both presidential campaigns Sunday for the increasingly negative tone of their advertising.
Former Bush political adviser Karl Rove said McCain and Obama had both shaded the truth in campaign advertising.
"McCain has gone, in some of his ads, similarly gone one step too far in sort of attributing to Obama things that are, you know, beyond the 100-percent truth test," Rove told "Fox News Sunday."
The Obama campaign has complained especially about an ad that declares Obama supports sex education for kindergartners. He supported legislation that would teach age-appropriate sex education to kindergartners, including information on rejecting advances by sexual predators.
"Both campaigns are making a mistake, and that is they are taking whatever their attacks are and going one step too far," Rove said. "They don't need to attack each other in this way."

“Obama has been under increasing pressure from Democrats to strike back harder at McCain”
Take your Jedi weapon! Use it. Strike me down with all of your hatred and your journey towards the dark side will be complete!
So now Rove is a reliable source?
Maybe AP thinks that conservatives still read their tripe.
What a pathetic, cowardly whining wimp.
Drawn from a bottomless supply of ammunition.
Whining gets you nowhere in a campaign. Obama needs to wise up. People see the Palin interview and then hear 0bama saying McCain’s being unfair...come on, we have eyes.
One of Clinton’s advisors said people know when one candidate (Palin) is being subjected to more increased scrutiny than the others have been...it backfires.
Now with 0bama whining it just shows desperation. “Make him play fair, Mommy” isn’t a line that works for politicians.
Keep grapping those straws Obama, they will help you stay afloat for a couple more days.AWB
Yeah, just drive around Seacliff in San Francisco or Ross in Marin and see how many McCain signs you see in people's yards.
For those of you who don't know the Bay Area, those are patches of the *very* 'Wealthy and Well Connected'.
That will send the Obama camp into convulsions.
I guess Obama’s new campaign strategy is to whine his way to 270 electoral votes.
Stand up, Chuck!
Exactly...always playing the victim is uninspiring and shows a total lack of one's ability to handle adversity and to lead.
Hey Obama.......bring out your ANGRY WIFE to beat up John McCain!!
When they are screaming this loud, they must be working.
Karl Rove successfully derailed John McCain in 2000, and it looks like he’s trying to do it again in 2008.
Way to go Karl.
Biden is not just a running mate, he should be listed as "Chief Propagandist".
He reminds me of another "Little Joe" who worked so well with a little paperhanger that was very eloquent and promised "change".
Wait for it: When Obama starts hitting the race card heavy, fast and furious, you know he’s on the ropes. It hasn’t happened just yet. But it will.
