Shirley Eberle of Sunnyside didn't know it at the time, but as she plucked roe from kelp at an Alaskan fishery 20 years ago she was working next to future vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.
Years later, Betty Chavers of Yakima sensed Palin might be destined for something bigger when she worked as an accountant for the city of Wasilla, Alaska, between 2001 and 2003. Palin was mayor at the time.
"She is one tough lady. Very gracious, very well-informed," said Chavers, who owns the Quiznos on South First Street.
"Being in accounting, she would say, 'Is this necessary? If not, cut it.'"

Anyone think the founding fathers are smiling right now?
Franklin probably gets more than just warm and fuzzy when he looks down upon Palin...
OH that is funny....
There are many different types of "experience." I prefer the, "been there, done that" type. If the Golden Child wants to REALLY compare his experience with that of Governor Palin, I say, "Let's go for it!"
Sorry to be pedantic but I can see someone plucking roe from Salmon at an Alaskan hatchery but I never met a kelp plant that laid eggs.
Nice article though. It would be good to have someone in the top levels of government who has had a real job and had to depend on a real paycheck for a change.
i think they meant stripping the roe from the kelp where it is deposited from feline salmonettes after they’ve been ravaged on the death march.....
Ah, fresh water kelp!
They have a roe on kelp season in AK. I think they take the deposited roe directly off the kelp but anyone who knows more than that feel free to correct me.
It sounds like an episode of “Dirty Jobs”.
Regardless, I thought the article was more revealing about Palin than the 50th story about the library, high school basketball, or firing the safety commissioner.
Trouble is, the media will report that Palin tried to pluck
Roe v Wade from being the law in the land, and that makes her “radical” pro-lifer.
Local seasonal packing plant jobs for students?
One woman goes from working in packing plant to accountant to owner of a franchise.
The woman next to her on the line goes from packing plant to
commercial fishing business to Mayor to Governor to candidate for VPOTUS.
Only in America and maybe only in Alaska. This sort of progression makes me happy.
Yep. Even better, it was all accomplished with hard work and determination instead of a government hand-out or program.
That is America!
I am sure you were being sarcastic!
After reading about her college thesis I feel sorry for Michelle. She is in so many ways a product of racial politics promoted by liberalism. She is living the American dream but will never realize it (or enjoy it) until she removes the hyphen from her identity.
I know it’s rumor but it is easy to believe that she was the reason Hillary was denied the VP slot and if she is angry about the change in the polls/trends they are better off keeping her under wraps. Obama is on thin ice now and cannot afford more “help” from the usual suspects.
She will probably never believe Obama is losing for any reason other than his race. Sad.
