What’s so frustrating about this is now that the shoe is on the other foot with the GOP getting the upper hand. When they are finally in a position to control the future of energy sources (to a major degree not total) I can promise you that in all likely hood based on past experience . . .

they’ll blow it.

I am so fed up with the backroom deals it makes me sick.

The Republicans need to stay away from this sinking ship. Once the American people find out how much of a joke this bill is, there will be repercussions. This is a no win for the Republicans if they bite.

A side note, probably one of Palin's strongest areas of expertise is energy policy.

oil companies want to drill offshore and sell the oil to the highest bidder

And you wouldn't, if it was yours?
That's what it means to have a "free" market: everyone pays the marginal, market price.
The point of drilling here is not to horde it, but to increase supply, and have more of the dollars coming back here (i.e., to our corporations).

Don’t be wedded to one concept and not look at other concepts. If the US drilled their own oil and made it available to the US economy at one stable price devoid of price swings (up or down) caused by foreign strife, think how easy it would be for businesses to plan and operate and provide products to the consumers. It is no difference from having a consistent source for income versus a job that at one moment you make alot of money and at another moment you do not. If I had a family, I know which source of income I would prefer. A country’s economy is no different. What do you think would happen to our enemies such as Venezeula, Iran, Russia and jihadist Middle East if the US stop buying oil from them. China and India may step in, but their demands are nowheres close to the US demands, and the price of oil would drop and the cash available for our enemies to fund military and overseas mischief would be severely curtailed.

Yes, just let them sit tight for 17 days. Watch the dems’ heads explode as they realize that drilling can happen without them adding any conditions. Nancy Pelosi should have stayed in session in July if she wanted some input.

True, but if the Arabs drop the price of oil below the US cost of domestic drilling, the US oil companies would stop drilling and leave the US high and dry during a disruption. That is the problem of participating in the global oil market that many freepers expouse. There is a lesson we should learn from the last five years, the US needs domestic oil supply and oil is too vital to be subjected to the wild swings of free market and unstable foreign sources. Many experts have concluded that the tripling of oil prices has done more to cause a US economic slowdown. If the US drills and makes the oil available only to the US industries and consumers, granted there will be periods where the US consumer will pay more versus the global price of oil, but the oil will always be available despite a crisis in the Middle East, Nigeria and Venezeula. Keeping the oil in the US also means that US money is not flowing to hostile oil producing nations (Russia, Iran, Venezeula and other ME kingdoms) who take our cash and fund terrorism and overseas mischief.

Still no harm to USA...Oil can be drilled here as cheap as anywhere, without the expense of transport from ME or SA...the chaper oil is the quicker India, China, demand more and more fuel for the hugh new consumer demands...drill it, we will burn it!

Ike is a great example of why we need more refineries - and not along the Gulf.

'“Compromise” with the Democrats means, “okay, we’ll take a little bit of cancer”.'

Good analogy.

the Dems and the media will turn this on the Republicans and say, “see, the Republicans don’t want to do anything to fix our situation.” and the public will buy the message... and we will, yet again, be seen as the mean, nasty Republicans...

I would say that it would make good sense to not only have a strategic oil reserve but also add an economic oil reserve to keep the foreign producers in check. We need the ability to influence the price of crude oil all over the world. We would then be able to buy imported oil when the price is right and shift to reserve when they try to up the price to unrealistic levels.

There is a growing number of oil execs within the US oil companies that are having second thoughts on drilling in overseas countries. The original premise of global economy is nations will act based on profit motivation, but the US oil companies are running into oil policies based on nationalism trumping profit/good business sensd, just look at Venezeula, Russia and South America. Signed contracts were reneged, facilities were seized and new taxes were levied against American companies as the host country wanted a bigger cut as prices of oil rose. This growing group of execs have concluded that domestic oil operations offer best value (profits may be lower, but it is worth the legal stability) versus higher profits bundled with high risk of host nation nationalizing assests because the ruling government is motivated by nationalism and ideology. This is something globalist and free traders never accounted in their trade model because they think everyone in the world is motivated by profit only.

Sorry but drilling is not a short term venture. Its long term. One mid-east war and the price goes through the roof! If we start drilling, OPEC crumbles! They have no monopoly on the oil market and have to deal on our terms. The problem, BTW isn't in the drilling, its in the refining of oil. A barrel of oil is at $101 or so, but since Hurricane Ike shutting down the refineries, teh price of gas has shot up to $4 again!
