I believe it begins with fear, mortal fear. It changes to hatred after they realize there is nothing they can do about it.
They know they’ve been outdone. They can feel the noose tightening around their necks... greater fear, greater hatred.
It is a beautiful thing to watch!

And their hatred is making them blind, tossed to and fro in the sea lost in a storm and their anchor is tied up in a knot dangling behind the ship and is causing them to capsize.
