The Obama campaign is mocking John McCain for not using a computer. From the AP story about the computer illiterate ad:
"Our economy wouldn't survive without the Internet, and cyber-security continues to represent one our most serious national security threats," [Obama spokesman Dan] Pfeiffer said. "It's extraordinary that someone who wants to be our president and our commander in chief doesn't know how to send an e-mail."Well, I guess it depends on what you mean by "extraordinary." The reason he doesn't send email is that he can't use a keyboard because of the relentless beatings he received from the Viet Cong. From the Boston Globe (March 4, 2000):
McCain gets emotional at the mention of military families needing food stamps or veterans lacking health care. The outrage comes from inside: McCain's severe war injuries prevent him from combing his hair, typing on a keyboard, or tying his shoes. Friends marvel at McCain's encyclopedic knowledge of sports. He's an avid fan - Ted Williams is his hero - but he can't raise his arm above his shoulder to throw a baseball. In a similar vein I guess it's an outrage that the blind governor of New York David Patterson doesn't know how to drive a car. After all, transportation issues are pretty important. How dare he serve as governor while being ignorant of what it's like to navigate New York's highways.

thanks for fixing
Thanks for the info. It didn’t seem possible that he wouldn’t be familiar enough with a computer to do email.
This story made AOL news...which is huge.
I have an older Democrat relative.
She just watches TV.. no internet.
She was trying to goad me about John McCain not knowing how to use the Internet or the computer.
And I said yeah it’s because he can’t use a computer, tie his shoes or comb his hair because of his war injuries.
She was speechless. She had no idea what to say. It was like “Oh I should have never brought that up”
Without lipstick.
I didn’t realize the extent of his injuries until recently...and I’m a political junkie. Imagine the rest of the folks.
What in the world are they thinking ?
Mac has been using a computer for a while. The ad is false based on that alone:

He added, “But I am forcing myself ... let me put it this way, I am using the computer more and more every day.”
“I use a computer almost every day. I go on different web sites ... ours and the various media,” he said.
Between this and Palin, I’d say the Democrats just lost the handicapped vote.
Hey...did you make this this one too?
You know, that pig in lipstick comment really took my breath away.
but this almost makes me cry. I may not always agree with John McCain, but he is one of my heroes. He is someone any American kid can look up too. Like so many, he put his every breath on the line for this country.
to picture Cindy checking his email for him and him sitting there. I dont know. it just. whoa.
They are treating John and Sarah like scum.
yep!
While I agree this is outrageous, and to be pounced upon to the extent prudent or advantageous, the daily carnivals of scandal, smear, gaffe, investigation, and faux pas that drive every election sprint MUST NOT throw us off the task at hand: McCain, Palin, and all of us have to buckle down on economic issues and meat/potatoes policy messages about why our ticket is better for America than Hussein/Binladen.
We’re all mezmerized by Sarah and yes, there is steak under all that sizzle—but Hussein/Axelrod and their minions/media mustn’t be afforded any opportunity whatsoever to re-seize any initiative at all on fundamental issues about America’s future.
If McCain galvanizes and drives home some more much-needed, solid credibility on the economy(beside his minor trump mojo on domestic drilling) we’ll have those battleground states after all, and all along will be knocking bogies like this out of the sky in flames.
I agree - I was dismayed by the faux outrage type ads, and the Jane Swift concall this week. Respond with humor, or with the “not angry, but saddened” or something along the lines of “well, I’m sure Sen. Obama had no idea why I can’t type, but that’s what happens when you focus on personal attacks instead of issues. I’d rather talk about reducing taxes, etc....”
In short, we’re on the same page. But the gaffery is a joyous by-product of the current momentum of the race...
Ping!
I have got to take issue with you here.
Both Sarah and John talked about keeping taxes low, reform, energy indepenence ?
you sound like a Democrat. I guess you want to hear about some welfare programs ?
Good work!
I didn’t either!
I knew he walked a little stiff and I never saw him get animated with his arms very much.
But I understand now. He had every bone broken in his body.
Obama was a community organizer. I’m sure Obama sacraficed a lot to do that.. /sarcasm
