OT: Parts of Galveston Island are already flooded, with Hurricane Ike not due to make landfall until 1:00 a.m. (CDT) Saturday. Waves are splashing over the seawall. Water and sewage have been shut off. The roads to the mainland, if not closed already, will be closing very shortly. It's estimated 10,000-15,000 residents have ignored the mandatory evacuation order. The surge is predicted to be high enough to flood most, if not all, of the island.

Though Ike is only at Category 2, its huge size will make the surge much worse than it was when Hurricane Rita (cat 4-5) hit in 2005. Many of the people left on the island are going to die unless the storm changes significantly in the next 12 hours.

For the latest, see the live thread in Breaking News.
