Why is it whenever the issue of possible bigotry in the positions some people hold on these threads, they come back with these immaterial anecdotes? Notice that not once do either of you say you do not believe you are a bigot and that you take umbrage at the accusation, you just come back with these “some of my best friends are black” quips?
You know what I’ve noticed? People who use those kind of phrases are usually bigots deep down. They don’t want to admit it or even think about it, so they respond with totally unrelated and inconsequential snippets because it gives their soul some kind of moral band aid.
In other words, you don’t say it because it will sway the opinions of others, you say it because deep down you’re conflicted about it, it makes you feel better and you don’t have to think about for a while.
