Standing three feet down from the edge and having shell casings exit 5'-10' feet while shooting at an angle of 45 degrees would deposit those casings well down, maybe halfway, of the levee. Kareem Abdul Jabbar could pick up those casings and not be seen.

A well trained sharpshooter might leave brass at the scene of a shoot but they would never leave their magazines. Compean picked it up as he headed down to Ramos after Ramos shot "Scarface" in the back.

The answer is Compean. In his written statement he says he mentioned to Mendoza and Jacquez that he thinks Nacho (Ramos) "may have hit him".
