Former Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul said Wednesday that former Sen. Phil Gramm, R-Texas, called him on Tuesday urging him to endorse John McCain, sparking charges from Democrats that the former McCain adviser is still active on behalf of the Republican presidential nominee.
"I got a phone call yesterday and it was a bit of a surprise to me because their request was that I endorse John McCain. The argument was, 'he would do a little less harm than the other candidate,'" said Paul.

Paul only got 14% of the vote in PA because he was the only one left on the ticket besides McCain and Huckabee at that point. My wife and I voted for him out of protest, but that’s where it ends.
There is no doubt at all in my mind that voting for Barr is a vote for Obama and disaster.
We’ll be voting for McCain/Palin in November, along with anyone else with a grain of sense..
What’s Graham trying to do? Torpedo McCain? Ron Paul’s endorsement would sink McCain’s campaign!
Honestly, I don’t believe a thing that Paul says. Graham may have called him as a friend, and joked about getting his support, but I seriously doubt that anyone would really care about Ron Paul’s endorsement (other than another nobody).
I noticed you joined in late August, could you be an Obama fan perhaps?
Perhaps Gramm was worried about him becoming the leader of some coalition third party as had been rumored. Who knows? Paul is a douche bag either way.
Some of what Paul has been saying is dead-on, and yes it's a shame the GOP and conservatives have smeared him and his supporters so I can understand a little why he won't endorse McCain. We do need to return to limited government, sound money, and states rights again. Paul is dead-wrong on the war and most foreign policy, and as much as I wish eliminating 90% of the federal government isn't going to happen overnight. The smart thing for Paul to do is to nurture a new generation of conservative-libertarians to run for office and rejuvenate the GOP instead of complaining about sour grapes and making the accusation that he's a nutcase become more of a reality.
Gramm supported Tom Delay when he defeated Paul back in 85. I think nothing has been the same since...
Paul will pull more anti war nuts from Obama than he will thoughtful libertarians from McCain/Palin.
The guy held his “Convention” in Minneapolis the same time as the Republicans held theirs.

Ron Paul has his problems, like all politicians.
But his heart is in the right place, if not his head.

Too bad he allowed the kook fringe, 9/11 Truthers to hijack his campaign. He might have forced the level of the debate to a higher level than “lipstick on a pig”.

Ron Paul’s hubris precludes him from seeing this obvious source of attention & support.

Both know darn well that they have ZERO chance of winning anything, this is just a ploy for attention, and if the country gets Obama as President as consequence, they both could not possibly care less.

I completely agree. I’ll be keeping an eye on his political action committee. I’m supporting McCain-Palin for the fall however as I believe most of his old supporters will.
I don’t think they’ve ever been close. If I’m not mistaken, Gramm beat Paul in the Republican senatorial primary in 1984. Gramm had only been a Republican for a couple of years at that point.
You are thinking of Tom Delay. Gramm did support Delay, to the chagrin of Paul.

Delay and Paul live on opposite sides of the Houston metro area, so could not have run against each other for the House. In any case I looked it up, and Paul ran against Gramm in his first Senate campaign in 1984, so Burma Jones is correct.
You have to forgive me, I am doing this from memory, you are right, but I found there was a LOT more drama then. All of the districts where different back in 1984 (it was TX22 then). Gramm did beat Paul in the primary for the Senate. Then, Paul quit his role in the House and Delay succeeded him there. All references I am finding show that Delay is who replaced Paul in 84 in congress. However, I did find this interesting note “In 1984, DeLay was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives after Republican Ron Paul stepped down to fight his alcohol addiction..”
Lots of drama there... I didn’t know Paul quit Congress because of alcoholism. That may not be true.. you know the internet.
