Illegal immigrants who return after deportation commit more crimes, study finds (Who'd a thunk it?)

In L.A. County, 75% of inmates who reenter the U.S. engage in more criminal activity within a year. The rate is less for illegal immigrants who have never been ordered to leave.

Illegal immigrants who have been deported at least once from the United States are far more likely than other immigrants to repeatedly commit crimes, according to a study by the nonprofit Rand Corp.

The data indicated that illegal immigrants, overall, were not a greater crime risk, according to the study, which looked at all inmates released from Los Angeles County Jail for a month in 2002.

But among those who previously had been deported, reentered the U.S. and were arrested and released from jail, nearly 75% went on to commit another crime within a year. And 28% were arrested three or more times during the one-year period.

The recidivism rate was much lower for illegal immigrants who had not been previously deported, with 32% of those inmates being rearrested within a year and 7% arrested three or more times during that year.

Who would have thought that people allowed to commit crimes with impunity would CONTINUE TO DO SO?

This is the huge conundrum facing the citizens of our nation. Illegal aliens pack our prisons. If we deport them, they return and commit more crimes. It is an endless and costly cycle. Other than putting up returning criminal aliens before a firing squad, there is no solution. Sorry, gut it’s the brutal truth.

I’d just shoot ‘em. The entire illegal immigration issue would go away in less than a week.

A new approach by the illegal loving NYslimes. So we cause them to commit crimes by upholding our laws and deporting them. I tell what makes them commit more crimes, it is seeing how easy it is to get away with breaking immigration laws and they think they can then break all laws with impunity.

Wrong!! There are several solutions. The first, and most obvious, is to fine and put out of business anyone hiring illegals, get rid of all financial assistance (including welfare and health care)and they will self deport for the most part. Secondly, build the wall and patrol it, dedicate our national guard to doing what their primary job is, guarding our nation by patrolling the border. Make it a felony, not a misdemeanor as it is now, to enter illegally and place a 10 year mandatory prison sentence on the crime. All of these are common sense measures and should have been implemented long ago but of course there are those people who think we should just let things go because "we can't do anything about it"! Again, I say BS.

I base my argument on what is happening now, and what has happened in the past. I simply don’t believe this nation will take the steps you outline. There will be no solution in my lifetime or yours.

One thing we are doing is charging record numbers of aliens in federal court for the crime of illegal reentry. They face up to 20 years with no parole, and those criminal aliens who had been deported after being convicted on serious crimes are actually getting long sentences, for nothing other than sneaking back in after being deported. Even those who haven't been in any trouble other than for coming in illegally are spending at least a few months in jail generally before being deported again and they are warned that if they are convicted again for illegal reentry the sentence will be much worse. If we just keep enforcing the existing laws like we should have done all along it will have an effect. Gone are the days when these people can feel like the worst that will happen if they come back after being deported is that they'll be deported again. We need to step up these prosecutions and keep it up.

Remove the incentives: no more birthright citizenship for children, except for those of U.S. citizens and U.S. permanent residents; no more government benefits; no more free K-12; and the list goes on. Then, add some enforcement of existing laws.
