A new white humpback has been sighted off Byron Bay on the east coast of Australia. The newcomer, which was filmed by a television news helicopter, has excited marine scientists who think it may be related to Migaloo - to date, the only known all-white humpback whale.

Here is a picture of Migaloo, the older of the two albino humpbacks. Unfortunately, recent studies have found that he is suffering from skin cancer and probably will not be around much longer.

That’s pretty interesting. I’m a big fan of the white Lipizzaner stallions as was one of my all-time heroes. I read recently that they also are highly susceptible to getting skin cancer.

Ahab's nemesis was based off a real animal, named "Mocha Dick".
First spotted in 1810 off Chile's Mocha Island, the massive albino bull sperm whale survived no less than one hundred attempts to kill him, often turning on his attackers in an extremely aggressive manner. There are numerous accounts of him attacking and damaging whaling ships and sinking smaller craft.
He was finally killed in 1838, when he went to the assistance of a cow sperm whale whose calf had just been killed by some whalers. His body was over seventy feet long and yielded over one hundred barrels of oil.

I really enjoyed listening to Moby Dick on audio CD. I forget the man’s name but it was narrated by one of “THE” audiobook narrators and it was wonderful. Not all books translate so well to that format but I really think it was meant to be told like an old sea tale (even the historical and taxonomical stuff with whales was pretty interesting.)
