Not everybody is laughing at Russell Brand at this year's Video Music Awards.
Jordin Sparks spoke out against the British comedian's jokes about the Jonas Brothers and their purity rings before introducing T.I.'s performance.
"I just have one thing to say about promise rings. It's not bad to wear a promise ring," Sparks, 18, told the crowd, off-the-cuff, "because not everybody guy or girl wants to be a slut."
The former American Idol's comments were met by an audible cheer from the crowd.
During his opening monologue, Brand had poked fun at the Jonas Brothers, suggesting that they should be taking advantage of their celebrity to win dates. (Brand, himself, is a famous lothario in his native England.)
Sparks has long spoken publicity about holding onto her virginity. She, too, wears a purity ring.
Later, Brand returned to the stage to offer an apology of sorts.
"I didn't meant to take it lightly," the host said about his purity ring remarks. "I don't want to piss off teenage fans." Still, Brand, whose apology soon morphed into a series of off-color jokes, said, "Promise rings, I'm well up for it. [But] a bit of sex, it never hurt anybody."

Love it. Go girl.
Good for her! Someone standing up for purity at the MTV awards and a NYT columnist writing a positive column about Gov. Palin—what’s going on in this country?!
Apparently these people have done something laudable, so good for them. But I have no earthly idea who any of them are.
Unfortunately I do. The "Jonas Brothers" act makes Frankie Avalon seem like Frank Sinatra. They're just AWFUL, bu tapparently the kiddies love them. And the recording industry can't figure out why people don't buy music anymore!
I’m not sure, but I think she’s also been open about being pro-life.
Jordan bump! Yeah!
The promise ring is good...a good exercise bike would do her some good too. She gets fatter and fatter everytime I see her.
As much as I’m not a fan of the channel, the Disney kids shouldn’t have even been at this thing. MTV is a nasty outfit with a callous, awful group of fans.
I’ve been reading gossip blogs tonight and you won’t even believe the horrible things they’re saying about Jordin Sparks.
My favorite comment:
If someone ever said, "Keep it to yourself" in relation to, say, a gay pride parade, I would wager that this person would have an apoplectic fit.
I just read that Brittany Spears called Bush a “retarded cowboy fella” at the VMA awards last night. Now I know she’s an ignorant s*ut.

To whom?:
Don’t take it back, just transfer the ignorant part to Russell Brand.
The devoted are incensed that Jordin "said" you're a slut if you don't wear a purity ring.
That's their position and they're sticking to it, no matter what you try and tell them otherwise. Nevermind that she didn't actually say that.
I always loved Brand’s stand-up in England and thought the character he does (the clueless Rock Star Moron) was wonderful. No more. His open to the VMAs, trashing the president and Sarah Palin, was not only disgusting and offensive it was unfunny.
