Never forget - Bush had the ‘04 election in the bag, until the first debate - don’t get complacent!

There is a lot of over confidence on FR which leads to complacency.

"There is a lot of over confidence on FR which leads to complacency."

Sigh... Every election, people trot out this "complacency" meme, but that's just not how human nature works. Bin Laden got this one right: "People back the strong horse." Which team sells more merchandise and packs more fans into the stadium: the one people expect to win, or the one people expect to lose? Which team plays harder?

The fact is, most people do not sign onto losing efforts. Few people will volunteer for a candidate that they think is going to lose, but they'll happily hop onto the coattails of a winner. Texas' electoral votes are a foregone conclusion, but you'll see a damn sight more yard signs for McCain in Texas than you will in a battleground state. Conversely, you can't swing a dead voter here in the People's Democratic Republic of Seattle without hitting an Obama bumper sticker, but I guarantee you that's not because they're nervous about whether The One will carry Washington.

There is a reason the media bias their polls toward Democrats. There is a reason why the media and the Obama campaign (yeah, I know, I'm stuttering) pushed Obamamania. For that matter, there's a reason why the McCain campaign worked so hard to mock Obama and burst that celebrity bubble. Believe me, it's not because they thought "overconfidence" or "complacency" were going to hurt the Democrats.

Now, if there are any McCain staffers who are overconfident or complacent, then sure, that's bad, but Steve Schmidt's clearly too smart for that. The rest of us need to just shut up and soldier, and enthusiasm and, yes, confidence does nothing but help that.

So be confident: We're going to win. Now go out there and be part of that winning effort... not because we'll lose if you don't, but because being on the winning team is fun.
