Yes, I would very much like to hear an answer to that. Clearly he has recited the shahada just over a year ago (to the New York Times, of all places --- while a tarnished version of its better years, still a very important news organ), so this is not a discussion of an event in the far past.
My own opinion is that he is a professing Muslim.
There's just no other explanation for any recitation of the shahada to the New York Times. Understanding its significance, I certainly would never do so; Senator Obama had Koranic training as a child, and clearly must understand the significance of its recitation.
