This makes A LOT of sense. Wooten just gave an interview to WaPo about how much he wants to put all the animosity behind him and how he regrets a lot of what he did. It easily could have been to cover his tracks/avoid suspicion that he's the one who made stuff up and sold it to the Enquirer.
What kind of BS reporting is this? Now we're going to report on the speculation of pundits as if THEY were sources? Who gives a cr*p about the speculation of pundits in a news story? They're pundits, let them speculate in their own columns written under their own bylines where they can be held responsible.
