Sarah Palin: John McCain's secret weapon to win over the Reagan Democrats
The Telegraph ^ | 9/6/08 | Tim Shipman

Posted on 09/06/2008 11:31:52 AM PDT by LdSentinal

The Republican presidential candidate signalled his intentions by using his first weekend of campaigning since his party's convention to launch a political raid into the heart of Reagan-Democrat country, home of the fabled blue collar voters who Mr Reagan captured from the Democrats in the 1980s.

Mr McCain, and particularly Mrs Palin, met with a rapturous reception as they held a rally in Macomb County, Michigan, where pollsters first identified the breed of patriotic conservative, blue collar workers who the McCain camp now believes hold the key to victory in November.

On Friday night in Sterling Heights, Mr McCain's selection of Mrs Palin appeared to have utterly transformed his campaign and made easier the task of converting Reagan Democrats to McCain Democrats.

Where he once played to a few hundred people, he was greeted by an electrified crowd of 6,000 chanting "Sa-rah, Sa-rah!", "John Mc-Cain, John Mc-Cain!" and "U-S-A!"

Mrs Palin immediately made explicit how the McCain campaign will take on Democratic candidate Barack Obama in the coming weeks. "We went right from the convention to small town USA," she said. "It's true that they grow good people, people who are working hard for America.

You love your country in good times and bad and you're always proud to be Americans."

McCain will be hard pressed to win one of these states. If he manages that, it will make an Electoral victory a solid bet.

Sarah Palin’s running mate is not the draw on this ticket, and he knows it.

John McCain does not have to pander one little bit to Democrats of any stripe. The larger number would have nothing to do with him anyway, and the part that can be stirred, are already attracted to Sarah Palin and her common-sense appeal.

John’s biggest contribution to this campaign? Let Sarah be Sarah, and don’t cross her up.

He already went to Wisconsin and Michigan. Minnesota and Pennsylvania will be next in sight.

What about Ohio? It seems to be quite similar to MI.

West Virgina which is chockful of Reagan Democrats is safely red. Obama is not even campaigning in the Mountain State.

I think there are potentially a lot more “Palin Democrats” than there ever were “Reagan Democrats”.

Obama got stomped by Clinton in Ohio. He is vulnerable here. Ohioans have forgotten about the debacle of the Taft years thank god and trying to attach McCain to Bush is not going to work very well with Palin in the picture. Axelrod said they will continue to rely on this smear strategy but if so I think they will find it a waste of resources and time in the end. With Iraq safely off the table, Bush is pretty much history.

Agreed. And Hillary is going to tell the Rat governors in Pennsylvania and Ohio to do the minimum for Obama - nothing more. Its not in her interest to see him win and she wants to teach Democrats a lesson in what the price is for double crossing her.

Are there still any “Reagan Democrats”? Didn’t they all turn into Republicans? Seriously.

We tried like hell to wring out as many Votes here in MN in 2004 as we could, and we came within 200k. I don’t think we can do any better than that.

We’ll give it a shot

Even Reagan didn’t carry Minnesota as they stuck by the favorite son. Minnesota flipping seems rather daunting...

I wish so much I could help you. Stuck in TX (nothin’ but net) after being in FL for the last election, and TN when Gore lost it to Bush. It’s killing me. Even a yard sign in my all-Republican neighborhood would be an understatement. Surely there is something to be done from here for y’all, like verifying voter registrations online (death cert search on names?) or something. I’d be a wizard at that. Any ideas other than donations and phone calls?
