The US military provided combat training to 80 Georgian special forces commandos only months prior to Georgia's army assault in South Ossetia in August.
The revelation, based on recruitment documents and interviews with US military trainers obtained by the Financial Times, could add fuel to accusations by Vladimir Putin, Russian prime minister, last month that the US had "orchestrated" the war in the Georgian enclave.
The training was provided by senior US soldiers and two military contractors. There is no evidence that the contractors or the Pentagon, which hired them, knew that the commandos they were training were likely be used in the assault on South Ossetia.

Maybe they can slip around and demolish that tunnel.
What’s your point?
Bush’s Fault.
Exactly. Last I heard Georgia was a country and admitted to the UN for what that is worth. So again what is your point Charles?
So we can’t train troops from an independent, allied country because they live somewhere near Russia?
Charles Clover, channeling Putin propaganda straight from Moscow..... reminds me of a certain NY Times so-called journalist in the 1930s who just adored Stalin and thought he could do no wrong.
We've been training Georgian troops in Georgia for years. It was our training of Georgian forces that lead to the Georgians operations in the Pakisi Gorge that removed Chechen terrorists from the gorge.
It was our gift to Russia in the WOT. And what thanks does Putin give? He invades Georgia.
And how clueless is this reporter Charles Clover who sits in one of the most repressive anti free speech countries in the world, Russia as he writes this uninformed BS.
Charles darling, let me rephrase your sentence that had to be approved by Putin himself, “The revelation that Russia invaded a sovereign country recognized by the United Nations adds fuel to the world's free nations’ fears that the United States of America is morally bound to train Georgian Soldiers to defend the country from its neighbor, The Rabid Bear.”
“So we cant train troops from an independent, allied country because they live somewhere near Russia?”
And they were trained and equipped for counter-insurgency warfare, not taking on Russian armored divisions.
Those commandos were trained by the US, so that they could be utilized in Iraq, where the Georgians had 2,000 troops deployed, the third largest contingent. Of course after the Russians invaded Georgia, the Georgian troops where flown home, in USAF transports.
Great thread. Charles is not the sharpest knife in the drawer, we see.
It’s tough to say which is more accurate, in terms of attribution: “By Charles Clover in Moscow,” or “By Moscow in Charles Clover.”
Charlie Clover doesn't like Sarah Palin either.
Charles Clover:Governor Palin, on the other hand, was described to me flatly by the head of one American environmental group as "Dick Cheney in go-go boots".
Clover meets/speaks with the heads of American environmental groups in Moscow?
