Newsweek is owned by the viruletly anti-semitic Washington Post. As we all recall they campaigned against Senator George Allen two years ago with such information as the fact his mother was Jewish during WWII.
I believe she was Jewish before and after WWII as well.
The single thing that hurt Allen the most was the "macaca" comment, and the Washington Post went all out using that story against him. In the end the election was extremely close, and any one of several factors could be considered decisive (like the overwhelming Muslim vote for the Democrat). The loss of that seat gave the Senate to the Democrats, but George Allen's inability to handle the "macaca" nonsense showed that he wouldn't have been the candidate the Republican Party needed for President in 2008.
