My daughter just left today for Palo Alto ... is that in the quake area ?
Nah, she’s across the Bay!
She probably didn’t get a chance to feel it. If my monitor hadn’t wiggled I may not have noticed it and I’m about 25 miles west of it. PA is about 35 miles southwest of it and mostly on hard rock so shock waves don’t propagate as well.
A magnitude 4 earthquake doesn’t have much of an area, usually just a good jolt up to 6 or 10 miles from epicenter. Magnitude 4.5 you start seing broken wine bottles at grocery stores a few miles from the epicenter. 5.0 can cause a real mess, stuff coming down off walls, TVs coming off of stands, etc. With a 5.5 you get some property damage near epicenter, cracked chimneys and other damage mostly to glass and masonry, 6+ you are talking real damage and some injuries.
