“Gee, now why would Russia, who has no border on the Black Sea, complain about a U.S. ship docking in the Georgian Black Sea port of Poti?!”

The question answers itself. A re-imperialist Russia wants a black sea port. They wanted it in the 1850s and they want it again. They want to control the oil that Hitler was after too.

It is often forgotten that Hitler’s defeat at Stalingrad had a lot to do with the fact that he split his forces and sent half of them to the Caucasus instead of concentrating on Stalingrad.

Yup.
Dan Yergin’s book “The Prize” make it pretty clear that WWII was “all about oil”
(Japan to Dutch indies and Hitler to Romania and Russia).

A friend who visited Russia for 4 weeks (and has Russian wife) discussed with me how the Russian govt-controlled media is wholly in the “Russia is humanitarian” in Georgia and how the Russian people are like sheep following it. Everything Russia does is for the good of these countries. He mentioned that the people have a view of Govt where they are the children and govt is the father and they should obey. They dont have a democratic mindset of free citizens, but the mindset of USSR lingers, and is being recultivated by the Putin-controlled media.

” Russia’s support of the Muslim terrorist state Iran is well documented.

Russia is not an ally in the WOT, they are instead part of the problem.”

I mentioned this too him. Russia is strategically mistaken and they are playing with fire. All the states below Russia are muslim states. Demographics are not looking good for Russia. The problem is the KGB-type mindset that is treating USA as the enemy. It’s nuts. Russia is only hurting themselves in the long run.

Indeed my only misgiving in voting for McCain/Palin is McCain’s evident Slavophobia, which I do not think will serve the U.S. well.

McCain loves Poland and the Polish.

Yes, one can see examples of that mindset with some of the Russians here at FR. Enough people become that way and it becomes a dead-end society.

(Not that we don't have that sheeple mindset with some people born here.)

“Kosovo is in Serbia proper: unlike So. Ossetia, which was attached to the Georgian S.S.R. by Georgian Soviet Dictator Joseph Stalin, Kosovo had always been part of Serbia from the middle ages onward.”

Same with South Ossetia. See: Samachablo.

Okay, so maybe its Pravoslavnophobia instead, in which case it’s even worse.

I’ll still be voting McCain/Palin, but it is a serious misgiving.

McCain was physically tortured by Communists in Vietnam. Even after that he apparently still worked to improve relations with Vietnam because he thought it was good for his country to be healed. So Russia still has a chance with him, but its autocracy and closed media seem to be holding the Russian peoples future hostage. McCain wont be right on every issue as far as conservatives are concerned and we will be fighting him on some issues just like we fought GWB on some. I think I kinda understand his point of view now. He will be doing what he thinks is right for the country, not what he thinks is right for any particular ideology. It will be the job of conservatives however to point out when and where he is wrong.

Do USN vessels really “steam” anymore?

Ships still "sail"

Take another look at the grandson of Lennin and Stalin's cook and second genderation KGB agent, Putin. He loves Stalin and is now teaching Russian children revisionist history justifying Stalin's crimes.

There is no Slavophobia in opposing Russian irredentist and revanchist attempts to control Ukraine and the rest of Eastern Europe. However those who support it fall victim to Putin's resurrection of Stalin's appropriation of the Czarist propaganda of Slavophillia.
