I have seen Heart recently on Backstage on PBS (one of the few things I watch on that channel, except maybe the roundtable discussions on gay policy makers.) The fat one is always wearing “plus-sized” flowing outfits a la Stevie Nicks and tke skinny one looked like a biker chick.

"Why isn’t someone out there saying this stuff???!!!"

I believe McCain is a poker player and is only allowing the liberal-left MSM to show their hand before he slams them with his Queen High Straight.

Bad marketing, ladies. You put a song like that out for air time. You get air time, you get paid. You don't, you don't.

I bought a book by Norman Mailer not too long ago. I'm pretty conservative, he's pretty liberal, but I don't recall him demanding to give me my money back.

I don’t think there’s an appropriate ZZ Top song out there for political situations. “Legs”, “Pearl Necklace”, Haha.

Didn't they do a tribute to Obama, "Jesus Just Left Chicago." ;)

The last time I dug around ASCAP and BM(C; I? don't recall), it was about 7 years.

If that were true then you should be able to get any recording over 7 years old free off one of the music posting sites, shouldn't you? Yet you can't. I think the copyright is a lot longer than 7 years.

Hope they don’t file an injunction to get the song out of my head — ‘cause it won’t work. (Love that song, always have.)

My wife and I were long time Heart fans also. The last Heart concert we went to was just before the 2004 election. Ann Wilson spent several minutes promoting their preferred candidate with the roaring approval of the crowd. Since then I’ve learned to appreciate C&W a lot more.

Why, why, why, is EVERY good rock musician a bleeding heart liberal who hates Republicans? Besides Hagar, Alice Cooper, and Nugent, anyway...

It sickens me.

BTW...isn’t this song WELL outside of its copyright being over 30 years old anyway? Wouldn’t that make it public domain?

I have a solution.

Gretchen Wilson (who is NOT related to Ann and Nancy despite rumors) did a HELL of a rendition of this song live at least once - it’s on youtube.

I don’t know if she ever recorded it or not but...

Why not have Gretchen Wilson record it (or if she already has, use that version) and use HER version at campaign events??? Heart can’t stop another artist from recording a song they wrote as long as she follows recording industry protocol and they also can’t stop the GOP from using the cover version at events.

Looks like we’re both off the mark, although your original post was more right than mine. I checked up on the Copyright Act and here’s the copyright duration as listed in Circular 15A:

“Duration Under the Previous Law

Under the law in effect before 1978, copyright was secured either on the date a work was published or on the date of registration if the work was registered in unpublished form. In either case, the copyright lasted for a first term of 28 years from the date it was secured. The copyright was eligible for renewal during the last (28th) year of the first term. If renewed, the copyright was extended for a second term of 28 years.1 If not renewed, the copyright expired at the end of the first 28-year term. The term of copyright for works published with a year date in the notice that is earlier than the actual date of publication is computed from the year date in the copyright notice.

1For a number of copyrights, the second term was extended beyond 28 years by special legislation.

Effect of the Present Law on Length of Subsisting Copyrights

The old system of computing the duration of protection was carried over into the 1976 statute with one major change: the length of the second term is increased to 67 years.2 Thus, the maximum total term of copyright protection for works already protected by federal statute is increased from 56 years (a first term of 28 years plus a renewal term of 28 years) to 95 years (a first term of 28 years plus a renewal term of 67 years).

The specific situation for works copyrighted before 1978 depends on whether the copyright had already been renewed or was still in its first term on December 31, 1977.

2 Enactment of Public Law 105-298 extended the second 47-year term an additional 20 years.

• Works originally copyrighted before 1950 and renewed before 1978:3 These works have automatically been given a longer copyright term. Copyrights that had already been renewed and were in their second term at any time between December 31, 1976, and December 31, 1977, inclusive, do not need to be renewed again. They have been automatically extended to last for a total term of 95 years (a first term of 28 years plus a renewal term of 67 years) from the end of the year in which they were originally secured.”

The answer is that too many of them have a pressing need for government funded alcohol and drug rehab centers in every major city with a good concert hall.

Considering that Gretchen’s mother is younger than Ann or Nancy, it seems unlikely!!

HEART (sisters Ann & Nancy Wilson) has every right to “protect” their song! It is their right to not want to be associated with a political party.
They are talented musicians, still on tour, still producing new music. Check out Ann Wilson’s new CD “Hope And Glory” about social conciseness. LOVE RULES!
BTW: Their father was a General in the U.S. Marines.
