No, you were correct with your first statement. There was more coverage (and thicker) in 1996. This year is still one of the least coverage in recent history, however, it is recovering from last year.

The main point is that 2007 was the worst in recent history (since 1979) and the alarmist were saying this year could be ice-free, when in fact, it is not as bad as last year.

I think it will take a few years to see if it is really going to start growing again. Partly it depends on how it grows this winter.
